After producing and participating in the compilation Sans Limite (1998) on which he recorded a duet with Princess Erika and another with the Neg’Marrons, the artist released the opus Viens (1999), which took him on tour again. The album does not meet the same success as its predecessors despite good titles such as the duet performed with N’Bee or the one with Ben-J (of the Neg ’Marrons). His label Virgin then decides to publish a Best Of in 2002. The recording industry is in upheaval, the idea of the compilation does not please the artist too much even if he agrees to put an original title there, and Tonton David prefers to leave the Parisian suburbs to settle in peace in the countryside.

"I was very lucky to arrive at a time when you could stay fresh. My experience in music is so beautiful: I have traveled everywhere, I have met fascinating people, I have made prestigious collaborations. But when I look at what is happening now ... We make our young people believe that everyone can succeed. We do disposable music, we do McDonald's. Before, when you were making music, you would make an album, you would go in the studio, you will stay with the musicians for a long time. Today, it's over. There are beatmakers who tell you that they have the recipe (ironic). They all know how to hit the mark. Before, in a recording company , you met a guy who was fifty years old and had crazy stories to tell about lots of people. Today, you have a thirty-years-old guy in front of you who knows everything about everything, who explains to you how he's going to change your life. It's enormous… "

In 2005, the album Babelou was released with the title La Gagne, performed with the rappers of Intouchable and produced by the label Wati-B . This opus receives a nice echo. Then it will be Livret de Famille, He walks alone and Ma Gouille in 2009. Although he hadn’t released an album since, Tonton David has been touring all over France and in the tropics (sometimes live, sometimes in sound system mode) while preparing his big record comeback for the end of 2021. He was working relentlessly from his home studio located in the East of France, collaborating with the Dig Studio, in recent years.

In 2016 in a concert at the Cabaret Sauvage, a mythical tropical music hall in Paris, Uncle David said there are songs that we wrote 25 years ago and it looks like we wrote them last week. »This admission of Tonton David is a reminder that despite efforts, much remains to be done to improve the human condition of the voiceless whose voice he carried so well through his art.

Last year in a teasing for his upcoming new album we saw Tonton David surfing new beats like Afrotrap. A new challenge for the one who felt that he had arrived on the music scene a bit like a meteor in an interview granted to the TV program secret d’artiste during the concert series he gave in Mauritius in 2017.

Tonton David, (editor Note Tonton means Uncle) a family man, felt that even if family life was not incompatible with the life of an artist, it was nevertheless necessary to make choices and concessions. Lucid in his outlook on life, he stated that, even though he didn't vote he had a real political conscience. Even if he refused the title of pioneer of raggamuffin music in France, Uncle David will have marked the end of the 80s and the 90s with his talent, his sympathetic figure was a comfort to many. He knew how to say poignant things with sympathy, tackling angry subjects with an empathetic persuasion that forced the audience to listen to him without hatred or violence. Uncle David did not need a shout to be heard, for he carried the truth with authenticity.

After suffering a stroke on February 14, 2021 at Metz train station, Tonton David succumbed to this stroke 2 days later. Father of 4 children, Tonton David, leaves to posterity a work that will have marked his era because it speaks of the problems of his time, even if it has a greater meaning for those who could directly identify with him.
