Ray David Grammont, better known by the stage name Tonton David, was born on October 12, 1967 in Reunion Island, an island in the Indian Ocean off the African coast and the island of Madagascar which is an integral part of Africa. The geography reminder is important because some still see Reunion in the Caribbean seas such as Guadeloupe or Martinique.

According to the biography written by Alexandre Grondeau for the site reggae.fr , with excerpts taken from the book Reggae ambassadors 100% Français . Tonton David is a pure product of the Parisian school of sound systems. He experienced the heyday of the Rubis barge with the High Fight International sound system, but he took the microphone for the very first time at a party hosted at Lasson studio by the Saï Saï. Disappointed by his performance, he decided to try his luck at a Massilia Sound System show, this time in Saint-Etienne. His appearance was then a success and he decided to definitely embrace a career in reggae, a style he had discovered a few years earlier in the Paris region.
