ENGLISH AS AN ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE ( EAL ) PROGRAMS
The Certificate III in Spoken and Written English was added to FLN ’ s Scope of Registration in December 2014 and the first course commenced on 2nd February this year . There have been strong enrolments for this program from the first term onwards . Being able to deliver the Certificate III provides further study options and pathways for our lower Certificate students , who can now look forward to a seamless transition from one Certificate to the next as their language proficiency improves .
The introduction of this program has also attracted a different segment of the EAL cohort . In many cases the Certificate III students have studied higher education courses in their own countries . Some of them hold qualifications in professional fields such as law , engineering , accounting to name just a few .
The Certificate III is an important gateway into Vocational Education Training and employment . Students have been encouraged and supported to explore future study and work options . Fabiola has been studying the Certificate III course this year and had the following to say about the program . “ It is very good ; it has helped me a lot . FLN provides a very good teacher to help all of the students to get opportunities to research their goals according to the aspirations of each student . That certificate helps you to get what you want , techniques , grammar , activities and how to prepare yourself to do what you want to do in the future ”.
Another new entrant into the 2015 FLN English Language program schedule has been the EAL P1 course which commenced on 7th May this year . The inception of this program was as of a result of a slight increase in demand from new students , coupled with improved student retention of existing students in term one . Due to these factors the class sizes for the existing beginner courses began to outgrow the classroom capacities .
‘ The EAL P1 program is a mixed level class designed to respond to the increased demand from high level Preliminary and low level Certificate 1 learners .’
