Industrial Microbiology involves commercial use of micro-organisms in various industrial
processes such as fermentation. Use of micro-organisms for production processes has been in use
since 18 th century and was facilitated by discovery of various microorganisms over the years.
Depending on nature of process, the industrial microbiology has two aspects, namely production
of microbial products through fermentation processes and use of microorganisms for services,
such as pollution control, to curb the contamination, and waste treatment. Microbial products
produced using microbiology include bread, beer, cheese, enzymes, energy sources, food
ingredients, and pharmaceuticals. Pharmaceutical industries require sterile environments,
especially, injectable manufacturing plants as injectable products interfere directly with the
circulatory system, where microbiology plays an important role. Second aspect of the industrial
microbiology is employed for pollution control and restricting and creating microbial free
environment. Micro-organisms can degrade all natural and man-made products making it easy
to create pollution and contamination free environment. Products manufactured using
microbiology include food, beverages, food additives and supplements, antibiotics, microbial
enzymes, industrial chemical, and fuels.
