We crossed the Pailolo Channel which separates the islands of Maui and Moloka'i. The name of the channel means "crazy fisherman" referring to anyone who might be crazy enough to attempt to cross this channel because it is known to be rough and windy. The crossing was quite comfortable aboard the Dauntless with Captain Elliot at the helm. We enjoyed the island vistas, humpback whales and fair weather. This was our fourth time diving with Lahaina Divers having added Moku Ho'oniki Rock to their list of dive locations since our last visit. Moku Ho'oniki Rock is often called Elephant Rock because it looks like an elephant. Located in the Pailolo Channel, it is a pre-historic cinder cone. It was used during WWII for bombing practice and is uninhabitable because of unexploded warheads still on the island. Regular dive sites are Fish Rain and Fish Bowl. A Humback whale surfaced about 100 yards away as we lined up on the deck navy seal style for our live boat drop. At Fish Rain, the variety of fish near the pinnacle was astounding. Their colors were vibrant against the dusty volcanic topography. Our next drift dive was Elephant Run. This deep groove between rock formations has spectacular textures, lighting and fish.
