take over, keep it in the core…”
DV: So my voice is haunting you? Oh
Scott, “We've only just begun”
And now, let's hear briefly from my
Dad: John S. age 61
DV: How long have you been doing
Pilates?
JS: I have been doing Pilates for three
years.
DV: Tell me a bit about your fitness
background:
JS: As a teen I surfed for many years
and then moved into weight training
for several years. For thirty plus
years, I rode bicycles long distance 25
to 50 miles a day 5 to 6 times a week.
There were several years of canoeing
and kayaking tossed in along the way.
DV: What brought you to try Pilates
the first time?
JS: I needed to get back into an
exercise routine again, lose some
weight and wanted to start slowly.
Since you're my daughter and I heard
from many people over the years that
you are the best instructor, I figured
Pilates with you was a good place to
start. I started taking your classes and
now take your Mat classes 3x a week.
DV: And you recruited Mom too!!!!

some weights, I mainly do cardio, spin,
elliptical, treadmill. I do some boot
camps, crossfit, and floor classes and
also some training sessions with the
trainers. I have tried to incorporate
Pilates into the mix to try to enhance
the secondary muscles and increase my
flexibility.
DV: What brought you to try Pilates the
first time:
SB: I had done Pilates reformer in the
past and wanted to get back to the
benefits of a low impact focused
workout.
DV: What do you find different about
Pilates than other exercise you may
have done in the past?
SB: While Pilates focuses on a whole
body workout, the focus is not on
pushing a lot of weight. It is about
focusing on the smaller secondary
muscles.
DV: How has Pilates affected your life
ie: body changes, strength, flexibility
etc.?
SB: I have noticed changes in my
flexibility and strength. I have also
noticed more posture and body
awareness when doing other exercises.
I always hear your voice: “Keep it
neutral, don't let the knees and legs
continued from page 27
Great way to “lead by example”! What
do you find different about Pilates than
other exercises you may have done in the
past?
JS: The concentration is on your core
muscle group and it is not high impact.
It is an exercise that needs to be done
with proper form and concentration to
get the most out of it.
DV: How has Pilates affected your life
ie: body changes, strength, flexibility
etc.?
JS: Since starting Pilates, I have lost 25
lbs and I am more aware of my balance
and posture, both of which have
improved!
T
his is just a sampling of the Fitness
Incentive “men of Pilates”. There
are more to come in future
newsletters. As you can see, Pilates can
benefit people of all ages and all fitness
levels. So, if you are a man, and have
kept away from Pilates due to stigmas
attached, or thinking it wasn't for
you….think again!!! Google all the
professional athletes who religiously
practice Pilates! If it's good for them,
it's got to be GREAT for YOU!!! Give it a
shot, you will be pleasantly surprised.

The New
Science
of Healthy
Aging
Dr. Brown
Y
es, aging is inevitable, something we are all
doing. But some of us are doing it better than
others. Aging well has always been something
of a mysterious art mastered by the fortunate few.
The good news is that’s no longer strictly true. New
scientific advances have resulted in the development
of “targeted therapy” supplements that attack the
causes of aging at the cellular level. They are the new
“smart bombs” of nutrition.
Dr. Donna Brown is excited to be introducing these
supplements to Incentives Organic Spa. She is
available for a free consultation, and will be hosting a
seminar on Healthy Aging in October.
