Silence Your Inner Lazy-Bone
I
'll be the very first
person to admit that
sometimes I'm just not
feeling 'it.' I just don't
want to put on my
sneakers and head to
the gym. Pajamas are
comfortable and fuzzy,
and let's face it, the
weather usually stinks.
It's just easier to stay home,
right? So, yeah, this happens
to me from time to time, and when it
does, there are a few things I've found
that help get me up and out the door.
They may seem simple to you, but simple
always seems to work best for this slow
study. This one goes out to all my fellow
inner lazy bones. You know who you are.
Our struggle will forever and always be to
quiet the lazy person lying right under
the surface. So here we go:

1. Switch up that darn music on your
playlist. This always has to be your first
step. Whatever is on there now isn't
working for you. 'Shuffling' stopped being
useful weeks ago, admit it, and I'm not
talking about reloading the same stuff
you were listening to 4 months ago, I’m
talking about new (to you) music.
Wanting an awesome new playlist and
having one are two very different things,
so how do you go about finding all these
great new tunes? Pandora and Shazam.
Make Pandora stations of songs you
already like (or think you like). Pandora
knows more about what you like
musically than you do. It's a fact, and if
you surrender to this, you will be better
for it, musically speaking of course.
If you don't have Shazam on your phone,
get it. It 'listens' to whatever song is
playing and identifies the name and
artist. This is great if you're in a store
and a song comes on that you
immediately love, yet never heard
before. It can even identify a song
playing in the background of a tv show.
It's my single favorite app on my phone,
and I use it almost every day. (I really
like music). Then once you get the
information, make a Pandora station with
it… You see where this is going. Both apps
are free. You're welcome.
2. I like to hedge my bets, so right about
the same time I'm switching up my
playlist, I start making plans with friends.
Lots and lots of plans revolve around
12
working out. I'll be lazy till the sun
goes down, but I'll be darned if I'm
standing up a friend. So I'll make gym
date plans at least three days a week.
Even if our times don't perfectly match
up, we'll schedule a sauna session or
some time in the cafe for whatever
time is overlapping. I'll let them take
me to a new class. There are so many
new ones on the schedule but there's a
good chance I won't go by myself. And
who doesn't love a good heavy leg day?
Ok, that's a stretch, but you get the
idea. Make plans with friends, heck
make plans with me, but chances are
I'll suggest a heavy leg day so be
prepared.
3. If one and two didn't work for you, I
always say, when in doubt, help
someone else out. You know there's
someone in your life thinking about
starting their own fitness journey.
They've thrown out hints and you've
sort of conveniently ignored them.
Judgment free zone. Now is the time
to make this person your priority.
Bring them to the gym on a week pass.
Get them started and show them all
the things you first fell in love with
when you started on your own journey.
Reliving it and seeing it through their
eyes will reignite your excitement. It
always does. Take them to their very
first spin class, or try a class together
that's new to both of you! Although
