Boaters going out of Santa Cruz also reported surprisingly good salmon fishing in Monterey Bay on the opener . “ Fishing for salmon was not bad today for most of the anglers on the opening day of salmon season , “ said Todd Fraser of Bayside Marine in Santa Cruz . “ There were some limits reported at 36 ’ 50 / 122 ’ 02 near the west side of the Soquel Hole . The area near Mulligan Hill was good for the anglers who worked through the jellyfish in 260-280 feet of water . The best areas I heard of around Mulligan ’ s and Soldiers were 36 ’ 42 / 121 ’ 53 and 36 ’ 44 / 121 ’ 52 . There were some nice salmon caught on the edge of the canyon near Pajaro and Moss Landing .” “ I did not get any reports from Davenport , but there were a few boats below Pigeon Point who caught some nice salmon in calm conditions . The majority of the salmon were caught trolling 30-110 feet down . The Blue Kajikis , Krome Krippled Anchovies , Purple Haze Kajikis , and Glow F . B . R .’ s were doing well . All in all it was a good opener with salmon being caught in multiple areas . The winds were down and the swell was not bad .,” said Fraser . “ The rockfish action was decent in the shallow water . There were some halibut caught in front of the Harbor and off Capitola ,” he concluded .
