Logan Meier was being guided by Doug Dolan on Hot Creek when he landed this beauty . Fishing with nymphs and egg patterns are still very effective in the early morning hours , and then the fish transition to adult midges , mayflies , and caddis in the afternoons .
Photo courtesy of Sierra Drifters Guide Service sierra , and with it comes warmer days and melting snow . Most of the open areas are still fishing well . The Upper Owens river is in “ transition mode ”, meaning the big rainbows are moving back to Crowley Lake , and the river will be ready to accept the spring spawn of the cutthroat trout soon . There are some resident rainbows and browns still in the river that are taking advantage of the spring insect hatches and nymphs below the surface . Water levels are lower currently , but this should change soon . The Lower Owens River has been good with smaller nymphs during the morning hours , and then the fish begin to feed higher in the water column as the afternoon hours approach . Look for caddis hatches that will get stronger as the month progresses and a solid mayfly hatch daily . Flows are at a great level for wading . Hot Creek is now very accessible in both the Interpretive Site and canyon sections . Fishing with nymphs and egg patterns are still very effective in the early morning hours , and then the fish transition to adult midges , mayflies , and caddis in the afternoons . Water levels are low here and will increase as more snow begins to melt . - Sierra Drifters Guide Service

FEATHER RIVER
Stripers Are Taking Their Time
YUBA CITY – Striped bass are still not showing in good numbers on the Feather River , but anglers throwing glidebaits and other lures are picking up a few schoolie fish . “ The stripers are taking their time getting up river , due to the lack of water ,” said Mike Searcy at Johnson ’ s Bait and Tackle . “ There are fish showing now from Star Bend to Verona .” Searcy said the Star Bend ramp is too low to launch boat , while the Boyd ’ s Pump ramp is usable , but boaters must be careful launching , Anglers can launch boats at Verona , but they need to be very careful going up or down the Feather and Sacramento River because of the shallow water conditions . “ Most of the fish being caught are hitting on glidebaits , swimbaits and A-Rigs ,” said Searcy . “ Schoolies in the 5 to 8 lb . range are showing , along with a few bigger fish .”

FOLSOM LAKE
Chunky Kings Reward Trollers
FOLSOM – Trollers are battling a mixture of king salmon and holdover rainbow trout . A 5 mile per hour speed limit for the entire lake remains in effect on the lake , according to the Folsom Lake Marina . Hobie Cove Ramp at Brown ’ s Ravine is the only open launch ramp . “ On my latest trip , the wind came up at 10 a . m . and we got off the lake ,” said Jerry Lampkin of TNG Motor Sports Guide Service . “ Before that , the two of us caught two big kings to 21 inches and 3 pounds . We also released some smaller kings in the 16 inch range .” “ We trolled with Kokanee Cut Plugs in the Christine Special color around 40 to 50 feet deep ,” said Lampkin . “ We trolled in the area in front of the Granite Bay Boat Ramp .” On a previous trip , Lampkin reported “ really good ” king salmon fishing for two anglers . “ We kept four kings in the 19 to 21 inch range and one 19 inch rainbow , along with releasing 4 salmon in the 16 to 17 inch range ,” reported Lampkin . “ Again , we trolled with Kokanee Cut Plugs at 40 to 50 feet deep . We also lost half a dozen fish .” Bass fishermen are enjoying a solid spring bite at Folsom , according to Don Paganelli of Paganelli ’ s Bass Fishing Experience . “ Boaters are picking up some really nice spotted and largemouth bass , along with some smallmouths ,” said Paganelli . “ Most of the fish are from 5 to 20 feet deep and some are right on the bank . Fishemen are doing best while throwing spinnerbaits and Keitechs and other small swimbaits .” Boaters need to use caution while boating on Folsom , as the lake is changing elevation on a daily basis . By state law there is always a 5 mph speed limit within 200 ’ of shore . The low water ramps at both Granite Bay and Brown ’ s Ravine are in operation .
