strong as the spring bite continues at California ’ s largest natural lake . “ We have been averaging from 80 to 100 crappie per outing , but these slabs are half the size of what we were experiencing a few months ago ,” revealed Ed Legan of Clear Lake Crappie Guide Service . “ You have to search around for the schools which have moved into the shallows from 7 to 10 feet as they are looking for water around 7 feet in order to spawn .” With the low water conditions in this drought year , there are far less locations for the crappie to spawn . Legan is looking for tules , rocks , or breaks with an edge . He is using 2.8-inch Keitech swimbaits or Spro Phat Flies in 1 / 8 or 1 / 16th ounce sizes to entice the slabsides . “ We have had doubles and triples all day long , but the slabs will scatter and you have to continue to move ,” he revealed . “ The Garmin Pan Optix is clearly a game-changer when it comes to targeting crappie . There are still crappie out 1 / 4th mile from the shoreline . Legan also took Bob Lewis of Lindsey out recently in the lake ’ s north end for largemouth bass . “ He caught and released a 9.5-pound bass on a Baby Brush Hog , along with hooking and releasing around 20 largemouths ranging from 3 to 4 pounds ,” explained Legan .

Cal Kellogg and Wes Ward of Fish Hunt Shoot Productions reported limits of trout on their latest trips aboard the patio boat . “ The three anglers fishing with me on Friday , April 2 landed 15 rainbows ranging from 14 inches to 3-1 / 2 pounds ,” said Kellogg “ We caught
the fish on a 50 / 50 mixture of worms behind dodgers and top-lined trolling flies in olive and orange . We also had limits the previous day .” “ The biggest trout we caught this week weighed 6 pounds , but we brought in an 11 pound rainbow last week ,” he noted .
Big fish honors got to Lynn Culver of San Jose , who landed an 11 lb . rainbow on a trolling fly at 10 feet deep . Lynn was fishing with Wes Ward of fishhuntshoot . com , who had limits for his 3 clients by 10:30 am . Kellogg also saw bank anglers catching limits of rainbows from shore while using PowerBait , nightcrawlers and Kastmasters near the marina . During the week of 3 / 29 – 4 / 2 / 21 , the Collins Lake Resort released a private plant of 2,000 pounds of rainbows , including trophy trout , as well as releasing 1 net pen of trout raised at Collins Lake . Bass fishing is also shifting into high gear . Jayson Yaj caught and released his first spotted bass – and then released 3 more . The lake level is 33 feet from full and the surface water temperature is 57 degrees .

Striped Bass Lead Spring Angling Parade
LIVERMORE - Want striped bass ? Then fish anchovies or shad imitation lures at Lake Del Valle . “ The fish are out chasing and shad ,” reported Jack Forzano of the Rocky Mountain Recreation Company . “ The hot spots have been the Hetch Hetchy Campground area , Heron Bay and the Dam .” Catfish action is also going strong . Just ask Jack himself , who caught a 12 lb . catfish while soaking anchovies at the dam on March 27 . He also landed two stripers weighing 5.9 and 4.5 pounds the same day .
