the alBerto Knot
words by // Tackle Shop Bob
This highly effective knot was developed by alberto Knie, a veteran angler and outdoor writer/
photographer who earned the nickname “Crazy alberto” for his extreme dedication to fishing.
He came up with the knot that bears his name as a superior solution for joining two lines that
differ when it comes to diameter and/or composition, such as monofilament (or fluorocarbon)
and braided lines. according to alberto, he discovered this knot through experimentation after
all the traditional knots he tried failed to connect mono or fluoro leaders securely to braid.
Because the alberto knot provides a more secure, reliable leader to main line connection, it’s
quickly gaining popularity among anglers from Mexico to Canada.
STep 1
STep 3
First, create a loop with the tag end of the
monofilament or fluorocarbon leader. While
holding this loop between the thumb and
forefinger of your right hand, run the tag end
of the braided line through the loop.
Once you’ve completed the seventh wrap,
reverse direction and make seven turns over
the wraps you just made. Then feed the tag
end through the loop exactly as it entered.

STep 4
Start wrapping the braid around both lines
of the monofilament (or fluorocarbon) loop,
and working away from the end of the loop,
make seven turns with the braid around both
strands of the leader.
While holding the leader with the thumb and
forefinger of your right hand, slide the coils
of the braid toward the end of the loop by
pulling on both lines of the braid. Pull hard on
both the braid line and the leader line to fully
tighten the knot.
