Sunday, we decided to stay in the Sacra- mento arm instead of running all over the lake, mostly because we were planning on leaving for home in early afternoon. We fished the Salt Creek area first thing in the morning, We Offer 15 FULLY CONTAINED CABINS and I caught one 15-inch rainbow With Private Docks on the Tasmanian and Free Wi-Fi Devil off the planer On The Sacramento Arm boards. FISH LAKE SHASTA Come up for some Great Spring Fishing! www.shastacabins.com SUGARLOAF COTTAGES RESORT put on a white Silver Horde Kingfisher spoon and set it 15 feet behind a set of Vance’s cannonball flashers. We had trolled about a quarter mile when my line was ripped off the Canon down- rigger – fish on! As I played the fish, it felt very heavy, but wasn’t doing much fighting. I asked John if I had perhaps crossed his downrigger line, but he said that it was clear. I continued pulling on the Okuma Kokanee Black rod, and slowly bringing up the fish. The Daiwa Lexa line counter reel said he was at 18 feet out when I saw a flash and got a glimpse of the trout – he looked really good! About that time, he saw the boat and jumped 3 feet out of the water about 15 feet behind the boat. Both John and I exclaimed “that’s a BIG trout!” The fish tore off about 40 feet of line, straight down behind the boat. I worked him back close and he jumped again – and again tore off a bunch of line straight down. Finally, I worked him back in as he was tiring, and netted a gorgeous 26-inch, 7-pound German brown! We set the net in the live well and the hook popped right out of his mouth as I touched it. We measured and took photos of the brown, and then gently released him back in the water – the biggest trout I have ever caught at Shasta. Back To Shasta! 2 weeks later, in the midst of the corona virus debacle, Bridget Looney and I decided to head back to Shasta and boat camp for a couple days. We figured being in a boat in a big lake would be about the safest place we could be! We arrived at the Bailey Cove ramp about 5 pm and launched the Rogue Jet Coastal with our camping gear. We trolled from the I 5 bridge to Bass Cove and only caught one bass. We then headed to Waters Gulch and went into the back of the cove to get out of the 10-mph wind blowing from the south. We found a nice spot to moor the Powered by Clean, Quiet, Dependable Honda 4 Stoke Outboards. Now available in 2 hp. to 250 hp. Models... the right outboard motor for any boating need. We cooked juicy steaks on the propane barbeque on the stern of the Coastal, had baked potato, salad and a good cabernet for dinner. As daylight waned, the wind died down and we felt like we were the only people on the whole lake. The stars came out, a half moon rose and the lake glowed silver with the silhouette of the mountains across the lake a rich cobalt blue. We set up the double bed size air mattress that fits perfectly in the stern of the boat, and kept warm in our sleeping bag for the evening. The next morning we made coffee, packed up the gear and started trolling for trout. We trolled out of Waters Gulch and turned up the Sacramento River arm. I was trolling 2 lines on top and 2 on the downriggers with Speedy Shiners, Tasmanian Devils, Yakima Mag Lips and Silver Horde spoons. We saw very little on the Lowrance graph, a few marks at 20 and 40 feet deep, so we set our downrigger lines there. The wind had come up from the north about 15 mph and we trolled dead into it for a while. The I decided to run up to the gooseneck where we had luck 2 weeks before. We trolled through “Brassfield’s Bend” and saw fish all over the graph from 20 to 50 feet deep, but couldn’t get a bite! Then we trolled across the middle hoping to duplicate the big brown and king salmon from the previous trip, but again not a bite.
