976 adipose clipped salmon.
The season total of fall and spring Chinooks
combined was 6,064 fish, including 5,171 adults
and 893 grilse. A total of 1,350 of those fish were
adipose clipped.
By comparison, a total of 10,221 fall and spring
Chinooks were tallied in 2018, including 9,297
adults and 893 grilse. A total of 2,260 of those fish
were adipose-clipped.
The total number of steelhead reported at the
hatchery to date in 2019 has been only 64 fish, as
compared to 1,869 in 2018 and 2,049 in 2017.
The coho salmon total for 2019 was 649,
including 619 adults and 30 grilse.

Anglers found very tough salmon and steelhead
fishing on the river this fall. The slow steelhead
fishing has continued into the New Year.
The hatchery trapped a total of only 1,586 fall
Chinooks, including 1,225 adults and 361 grilse in
2019, according to CDFW data. Of the 1,586 fish,
374 were adipose-clipped.
The spring Chinook numbers were more
encouraging, with a subtotal of 4,478 fish, including

Sturgeon & Stripers Respond
to Bait Soakers
PITTSBURG- There are plenty of
stripers and sturgeon in the system at
this time. While water conditions aren’t
optimum in MODELS
terms of temperature,
anglers

that make the effort and employ patience
are hooking up.
Sturgeon fishing has been better then
striper fishing over the past several weeks.
Sturgeon are prowling throughout Suisun
Bay and the lower end of the Sacramento
River. The best action is taking place in
shallow to moderately deep water now
that water temperatures are on the cool
side. Salmon roe has been the bait of
choice for most, but lamprey eel is still
performing well too.
Hooking stripers is all about fishing
bait these days, either cut bait from an
anchored boat or live bait drifted slowly.
In terms of cut bait, top choices include
shad, sardines and chicken liver. For
drifting jumbo minnow work best, but
mudsuckers are the easiest live bait to
obtain.
To up your odds of
success don’t forget to
apply some attractant
to your bait. Anise
Pro-Cure Super Gel
works well, as does
crawfish and garlic
scents.
