14 FRESHWATER August 16-30, 2019 FRESHWATER REPORTS: CONTINUED FROM PG 13 EAST DELTA cont. The weed spraying kept a few anglers away as the areas that they normally fish are devoid of grass. Strike King won the Manufacturer’s Cup out of the 7 manufacturers entered with professional anglers Billy Hines and Cody Meyers representing the company, and although Snag Proof did not enter the competition, the team of Acosta/Gomez used Snag Proof frogs. The Manufacturer’s Cup creates an exciting aspect to the event. Jordan Wong took first in the Junior Division with his partner, Tim Meeks, and we had a good turnout despite the heat.” Dan Mathisen of Dan Mathisen Outdoors participated in the event, and he said, “The lack of weeds in the south Delta contributed to a slower bite as the water is muddy from Fishermen’s Cut back to Holland Tract. There was so much boat traffic from heavy cruisers and recreational boaters over the weekend that the constant wakes muddied up the river, and the sparse weed growth due to heavy pelleting and spraying is unable to filter out the sediment.” There are algae blooms breaking out in downtown Stockton, Discovery Bay, and the Big Break Area, and the Department of Boating and Waterways advised limiting contact with the water, especially for pets. Anglers are requested to report any sightings of algae blooms through the HAB hotline at 1-844-729-6466 or through the following link https://mywaterquality. ca.gov/habs/do/bloomreport.html) - Dave Hurley EASTERN SIERRA Mid-Summer Trouters Score! BRIDGEPORT - “Bridgeport is still producing some very nice fish in the 3 to 5-pound range though we have received some reports from anglers saying the action is slow,” related Jim Reid at Ken’s Sporting Goods. “It seems like some days are very good with most of the reports being good but other days the fish are nowhere to be found.” “On the good days, they are catching fish trolling with Needlefish, crawlers and Thomas Buoyants and with baits like pinched crawlers, PowerBait and inflated crawlers. We haven’t heard much about good shore fishing, most of the action has been out of boats, tubes or kayaks. Most of the rainbows are in the 12 to 18 inch range. Boaters in search of smallmouth, largemouth and spotted bass should fish Senkos or Robo Worms in Aaron’s Magic and Morning Dawn colors on drop shot rigs at 5 to 20 feet deep. “One thing that should work on bass this time of year is trolling with Rapala crawfish pattern Shad Raps with 100 feet of line behind the boat along the shoreline,” said Cunningham. “That will get the lure down to about 13 feet deep.” Folsom Lake is holding 850,240 acre feet of water, 87 percent of capacity and 120 percent of average. The water level is 454.31 feet in elevation. - Dan Bacher KLAMATH/TRINITY RIVERS The Estuary Is the Spot for Springers SACRAMENTO – Fishing for spring Chinook salmon remains good on the Klamath River, but the only spot that has been producing fish consistently to date is the estuary. “We’ve been averaging 2 to 3 salmon per trip,” said Jerry Lampkin of TNG Motor Sports Guide Service. “Most of the fish we’re catching are adults in the 9 to 10 pound range. We are trolling with rolled anchovies and spinners in the estuary.” “All of the fishing is taking place in the estuary near the Requa boat ramp at this time,” he noted. “I’m not hearing of anglers catching the salmon upriver yet.” The spring Chinook Salmon fishery will be open through Aug. 14 on the lower Klamath River (downstream of the Highway 96 bridge at Weitchpec) and from July 1 through Aug. 31 on the Trinity River (upstream of the confluence of the South Fork). The daily bag limit has been set at one Chinook Salmon (no size restrictions), and the possession limit is set at two Chinook Salmon. The fall Chinook fishery will open Aug. 15 in the Klamath River and Sept. 1 in the Trinity River. The basin in-river quota is 7,637 adult Chinook Salmon for 2019. Regulations will remain the same as in 2018 with a two-fish daily bag limit, with no more than one fish over 22 inches (such as one adult and one jack). The possession limit remains the same at six fish, with no more than three fish over 22 inches (effectively three daily bag limits).
