FRESHWATER
August 16-30, 2019
FRESHWATER REPORTS:
to fishing jigs off ledges and drop offs in
15 to 40 feet of water.
The most excitement of the past couple
weeks was when Guercio caught and
released a 12.3 lb. largemouth. “I thought
it was a bass at first because it fought like
one, but then as I got it close to the boat I
realized it was a catfish,” he noted.
Other bass anglers have also reported
hooking catfish while fishing an array of
lures.

KIRKWOOD – How the
mackinaw fishing is doing at this
time at Caples Lake depends
upon who you talk to.
‘Some anglers say the fishing is great,
while others say it’s no so great,” reported
Taylor Tioben at Caples Lake Resort.
“Anglers are doing the best while trolling
with worms behind flashers at 20 to 30
feet deep.”
Big fish honors go to Matt, who landed
a 13 lb. mackinaw measuring 24 inches
long during a recent trolling adventure.
Shore anglers and boaters are also
picking rainbow trout while fishing
PowerBait, nightcrawlers, Kastmasters
and other lures at Caples.
Trollers are working deeper water to
catch rainbows at Lower Bear River
Reservoir. Boaters are using nightcrawlers
and PowerBait to bag the rainbows,
according to Mike Raso at the Bear River
Lake Resort.

Jerry Freeman of Live Oak caught three
catfish weighing 5, 6, and 5-3/4 pounds
while using beef brains and chicken
liver near the bridge, reported Kristiana
Richardson of the Collins Lake Resort.
Both bank anglers and trollers are
picking up some quality trout. Tara Soto
of Hemet landed a 6 pound trout while
soaking Power Bait near the dam. Danny
Kimbel bagged four trout to 4.5 pounds
while trolling a chartreuse lure about 20
feet deep.
The spotted bass bite is going strong.
Just ask Jacob and Issac, who caught a 5
lb. and a 1-1/2 lb. bass off the dam while
using Senkos.

PORTOLA – If you want to catch
rainbow trout at Lake Davis at this time,
your top prospect is to troll with lures.
“Trollers are catching the most fish in
the area from the Big Island to Mallard at
20 to 22 feet deep,” said Jeanne Graham
at J&J Grizzly Store and Camping Resort.
“The fish are hitting best on Baby Simon
and Needlefish red dot lures.”
Ed Dillard of Dilard Guided Fishing
reported good trout fishing on recent
trolling adventures. “We have done well
lately fish up to 20 inches,” he said. “Most
fish are being caught on Baby Simons in
blue and green. We are trolling down at 20
feet deep. The surface water temperature
is about 71 degrees or so.”
Bank anglers are picking some chunky
rainbows in the 25 to 26 inch range while
tossing out PowerBait and nightcrawlers
at Mallard Cove in the early morning
hours. “Fishermen who have a good
casting arm are doing best,” said Graham.

CLEARLAKE - The black bass fishing
slowed down recently, due to an abrupt
barometric pressure change from hot to
cooler weather, but the weather and the
fishing are now heating up.
“We’re averaging 10 to 15 fish per
person on my trips,” said Tom Guercio
of Tom’s Guide Service. “The fish are
averaging 2 to 3 pounds, along with a
couple of fish in the 3 to 5 pound range.
I’ve fished 8 out of the last 10 days for
bass on Clear Lake.”
Guercio has been concentrating on
the Ratttlesnake Island and Redbud
areas. “I’ve been fishing top water lures,
including buzzbaits and poppers, first
thing in the morning,” said Guercio. “As
the day proceeds, I’m then switching over
