EPIC Salmon Fishing aboard
the FV Bad Influence
O
yster Point - July 15th, 2018.
Frequently I’m behind my
computer or mobile device,
interacting with fans and
followers on social media
through the Facebook and
Instagram pages.
With the fishing on fire,
we’re getting countless
reports and photos of
beautiful salmon daily from
stoked anglers and lady
anglers - we appreciate all of you that
communicate and interact with us on a
daily basis.
But seeing all the epic reports, I
found myself wanting so bad to hop
onto a boat and get in on the action.
Don’t get me wrong - I love our fans
and followers and seeing all the great
catching, but I do like to fish and catch
fish too!
Somehow or someway, the stars
aligned last week. Shawn Chen Flading
aka “Chenzo” of South San Francisco
personally threw out an invite to go.
“Take along a friend! Just get me for
fuel! It’s all good bro!” he
said in a text.
Boy, was I
excited.
I brought my
longtime friend
Brian Arimoto,
who had never
fished for ocean
salmon before.
Also joining
us was Chen’s
Shawn “Chenzo” Flading (L) and the Fish Sniffer’s Roland Aspiras
friend, Noel Spence, also

River Salmon Season Starts With Surprisingly Good Fishing
S
almon season on the Sacramento River
opened with surprisingly productive
fishing on July 16. Guides and
experienced anglers reported
the top Chinook action at two
locations – the mouth of the
American at Discovery Park in
downtown Sacramento and the
upper section of the river below
Red Bluff.
The salmon season opened
as trollers and some moochers
continue to hook limits of
salmon while trolling off Half
Moon Bay and outside of the
Golden Gate. Anglers fishing
out of Bodega Bay are landing
limits many days also.
Fishing on the Sacramento’s
two major tributaries, the
Feather and American rivers, was tougher,
though anglers landed a few quality fish
there also.
Kirk Portocarrero of https://www.
sacriverguide.com reported top-notch fishing
on opening day out of Discovery Park.
“The four anglers fishing with me landed
4 salmon ranging from 12 to 18 pounds. We
trolled Silvertron spinners below the mouth
of the American,” he said.
Portocarrero also reported
two quality salmon in the boat
on the morning of July 17.
Dennis Pfanner at
Sacramento Pro Tackle rated
the salmon fishing in downtown
Sacramento as “7-1/2 on a scale
of 1 to 10.“
“Two of my customers
reported catching two salmon
up to 16 pounds, with around
25 to 30 salmon taken by the
fleet of over 20 boats,” said
Pfanner. “Most anglers hooked
the fish while trolling Kwikfish,
Flatfish and spinners.”
At press time, anglers were
continuing to hook some big,
bright salmon on the Sacramento from
Discovery Park to Garcia while trolling
spinners and plugs.
Further downriver at Vieira’s Resort
in Isleton, slow fishing was reported on
opening day, with two salmon landed.

What We’re Using
Cal Kellogg - fished the Old
River for smallmouth bass.
For tossing small Yo-Zuri
crankbaits, Cal chose a
Cousins GDS 701 spinning
rod. The rod was balanced with an Abu Garcia
Cardinal SX 30 spinning reel spooled with 8
pound moss green Trilene Big Game line. Cal
caught more than 25 bass while fishing from
his 14 foot Hobie Pro Angler kayak.
Paul Kneeland - fished
Bullards Bar Reservoir with
Bridget Looney of Colfax in
the Fish Sniffer 21’ Rogue Jet
Coastal. They caught limits
of Kokanee to 14 inches using an 8’ Phenix
Reaper composite triggerstick kokanee rod
with a Team Daiwa Z ultra light reel loaded
with 6 pound Yozuri TopKnot fluorocarbon line.
They trolled orange/white Dick Nite spoons and
Uncle Larry’s brass/orange spinners behind
orange and red Vance’s and Paulina Peak
dodgers off the Canon Downriggers 45 to 65
feet deep at 1.4 mph.
Dan Bacher - fished for
rainbow trout at Alpine Lake.
He used a Berkley Ugly Stick
GX2 6’ 6” medium action
spinning rod, teamed up with a
Shakespeare GX235 spinning reel filled with
6 lb. test P-Line CX Premium Flourocarbon
Coated Line. He fished with chartreuse Berkley
PowerBait, 1/8 oz. gold and black Panther
Martins and 2/5 oz. gold/red stripe Little Cleos.
