At some point in the morning you should be able to find fish tight to the bank . Sometimes they are up close right after dawn , but other days they ’ ll move up once the sun has been up for a while .

Since the trout are scattered , it pays to explore various areas . Wildcat Point , Miners Point and the Eagle ’ s Nest have all been booting out fish .

Most of the rainbows are going about 2 pounds with the bigger models running 3 to 4 pounds .

Bait anglers haven ’ t been scoring well and fly fishing has yet to hit its stride .

Schoolie Striped Bass Moving Into San Joaquin

STOCKTON - The San Joaquin-Delta is moving into the period of time when the water cools down enough for the striped bass to move up in force , but the run in the San Joaquin is always later than on the Sacramento River .

Vince Borges of Vince Borges Outdoors and Phenix Rods went out on a half-day trip with Tom Amberson , and they managed a few schoolie stripers on Delta Wood Bombers while Borges caught and released a quality largemouth bass on the topwater lure .

Luther Thompson at H and R Bait in Stockton said , “ We continue to receive a mixed grade of threadfin shad every day but Sunday , and the shad are in the 3-inch range . Striped bass to 30 inches have been landed off of Bacon Island Road and to 24 inches off of Whiskey Slough . Eight Mile Road is also a good area at Herman and Helen ’ s and there are crappie coming from the main river from the banks at Louis Park in Stockton .”

Randy Pringle , the Fishing Instructor , said , “ For striped bass , the daytime temperatures of 80 degrees plus is not cool enough to get the stripers to migrate far into the San Joaquin River , and the best action in this river system won ’ t happen until November . Everyone once in a while , someone will bump into a big one , but the big fish are the exception right now .”

Dan Mathisen of Dan ’ s Delta Outdoors said , “ There are lots of small stripers on the San Joaquin , but there is a school of 15 to 18 pounders that went through a few weeks ago , and they were found near the Cruiser Haven Bridge . Optimum ’ s Bad Bubba Shad or topwater lures have been the best baits , and there have been a few larger fish taken on the small boats that are drifting bluegill .”

YUBA CITY – While the fishing isn ’ t as good as it was a month ago , anglers are hooking good numbers of king salmon in the lower section of the Feather open to fishing below Live Oak .

When the late fall chinook salmon begin to arrive in November , Reimers plans to begin fishing them in the Knights Landing area of the Sacramento River .

The upper section of the Feather River above Live Oak closed to salmon fishing on October 15 , but the lower river from Live Oak to Verona is still open salmon fishing .

Boaters Target Bass With Spoons

SACRAMENTO – Boaters are experiencing top-notch bass fishing at Folsom Lake while fishing spoons .

Don Paganelli of Paganelli ’ s Bass Fishing Experience reported that he and his fishing partner caught and released 20 bass , ranging from 1-1 / 2 to 2-1 / 2 pounds , on Folsom Lake on a late October angling adventure .

“ We fished 3 / 4 oz . Blade Runner spoon in green pumpkin at 40 to 70 feet deep in the main body ,” said Paganelli . “ All of the fish were spotted bass .”
