Almanor Slows , Bucks Sizzles

CHESTER - July has given way to August and the trout action at Almanor has finally started slowing down . At Bucks Lake , the kokanee bite has really hit its stride with most anglers scoring limits or early limits of tasty salmon .
“ Almanor is still booting out some good trout , but it ’ s a lot slower than it had been . The hex hatch is basically over , the trout have spread out and they are feeding heavily on pond smelt ,” said Bryan Roccucci of Big Daddy ’ s Guide Service . “ When the trout spread out in the summer and there is plenty of forage around it can get really tough to hook them .”
Fish Sniffer reader Jay Thomas and his son Matt took a weekend trip up to Butt Valley Reservoir and did well while targeting trout .

The top water bite for bass is good early and late in the day , while anglers are fishing jigs and worms during the heat of the day . “ Quite a few fish in the 5 to 7 lb . range have been reported lately ,” said Lockhart .
“ A lot of catfish are being caught in the Carson arm by boaters and on the far side of the campground by shore anglers , but anglers aren ’ t weighing them in ,” said Lockhart . The lake is in great shape , being only 6 feet from full . The surface water temperatures are very warm , ranging from 82 to 87 degrees .

Trollers Nail Quality Kokanee At Hell Hole
AUBURN – Trollers are bagging limits of kokanee to 16 inches at Hell Hole Reservoir .
“ Boaters are trolling with hoochies and spinner bugs behind dodgers at 45 feet deep for the kokanee ,” revealed Craig Newton at Will Fish Bait and Tackle . “ Anglers fast trolling with Rapalas and Tasmanian Devils along the shoreline in the early morning hours are also picking up some German browns .”
For rainbows and browns at French Meadows Reservoir , Newton recommended trolling in the Middle Fork of the American River inlet , where the fish are stacking up in the hot weather . “ Fishermen are doing best trolling with worms behind watermelon dodgers ,” he tipped .
The kokanee fishing at Union Valley Reservoir in the Crystal Basin is a “ little slower ” than it has been , but anglers are still picking up limits of landlocked sockeyes in the 15 to 16 inch range , reported Alan Fong at Fisherman ’ s Warehouse in Sacramento . They ’ re trolling near the pumps with pink hoochies , spinners and other lures , tipped with white shoepeg corn , behind dodgers .
Union Valley Reservoir is holding 253,638 acre-feet of water , 95 percent of capacity and 118 percent of average . Loon Lake is holding 61,879 acre-feet of water , 89 percent of capacity and 104 percent of
