landing limits of fish to 17 inches most mornings . Orange and pink offerings are producing well . Top lures include spinners , hoochies and Apex Lures . Dodgers from Shasta Tackle and Paulina Peak tackle have been the choice of most anglers .
SOUTH FORK RESERVOIR
Take Pick Of Trout Or Bass
ELKO - There is road construction south of the state park headquarters so those wanting to access the west side of the lake will need to go in through Twin Bridges . Expect this to continue throughout the summer . The surface water temperatures have climbed into the 60 ’ s and fishing for both trout and bass is good .
Anglers have had good luck in Coyote Cove and along Jet Ski Beach , but coves further north on the east side such as Tomera , the boat ramp cove and those closer to the dam are good bets for trout anglers . The fish being caught are averaging between 14 and 18 inches with an occasional 20 inch fish being caught
Black bass are moving into vegetation at the south end of the lake . Wiper fishing is good and many of the wipers appear to being caught at the south end of the lake near the buoy line . Remember , black bass ( smallmouth and largemouth ) must be returned immediately upon being caught until July 1 and only one wiper 15 inches or longer may be kept .
Anglers were having fairly good luck using PowerBait or worms but fly fishermen continue to catch fish with chironomids and midge emergers . Flies that have been working include zebra midges , frostbite chironomids , snowcones , red or green copper Johns and rootbeer Yankee buzzers .
There has been a Mayfly hatch during late morning and anglers should switch to hares ears and PT nymphs at that time . Damselflies are also beginning to hatch so damsel nymphs and dries should both start working .
South Fork has been stocked with a total of approximately 24,000 fish this spring .

SOUTHERN OREGON ROUNDUP
Trout Fishing Comes On Strong
ROSEBERG - The ODFW reports that trout anglers have excellent choices for fishing right now in the Rogue watershed . Lost Creek Reservoir , Willow Lake , Howard Prairie Reservoir and Fish Lake are all producing either good numbers of nice and / or big trout . The Rogue River above and below Lost Creek Reservoir offers additional trout fishing opportunity for anglers who want to fish flowing water , but remember that flows are very high due to snowmelt .
On the lower Rogue , spring Chinook fishing has slowed in the river with increasing water temperatures and dropping flows . Boat anglers are starting to troll the estuary and picking up a few Chinook .
The middle Rogue below Fishers Ferry Boat Ramp is now open to the harvest of wild spring Chinook . Spring Chinook and Summer Steelhead are available .
The river is now open for trout fishing . Five hatchery trout may be harvested per day . Wild trout must be released unharmed .
Applegate Reservoir is well stocked with legal-size and onepound rainbow trout , which should make for good trout fishing . Trolling with a Wedding Ring / bait combination has been effective , as has still fishing with bait from the shore . Fishing for smallmouth bass should be good with a reservoir surface temperature of 61 degrees . Hart-Tish Park and boat ramp are open . The Copper Boat Ramp is also open .
Trout fishing has been excellent at Diamond Lake . A significant portion of fish caught have been larger than 12-inches . Diamond Lake has been stocked with tiger trout . These fish are intended to assist in controlling illegally introduced tui chub . Tiger trout are catch-and-release only and need to be released immediately and unharmed if caught .

L ast time we bemoaned the fact that our annual shad trip was washed out and I guess I am too set in my ways to locate new water , finding a spot to set up my trailer , learn new flows , be worried about my prop in untested water and possibly , just being too old to explore . Or , all of the above ?

Thus , no shad fishing this year , and worse , no striper fillets to accompany my crispy English muffin , coffee , hash browns and breakfast eggs . How could life possibly get any worse ?
Well , it did , as the awning on my trailer suddenly decided to become cattywampus and is a pain to lock back in place . So , what about the fishing ?
Well , have taken a few trips , most notably to San Pablo Reservoir for bass . A side note , the trout fishing has been on the slow side for most of the spring , however our trips were all bass oriented .
Our predetermined outing begins with a 6:15 AM launch , checking spots and techniques until we locate some fish and determine the best approaches , right up to our 11:30 AM quitting time . We then locate a small shaded area , slip the nose of the boat up on the shore , and have lunch , followed by de-launching . It is however , still bass fishing with about 98 % of the bass being spots and the rest largemouth .
What do I mean by that ? Well , as a for instance . Ron & I fished on a Wednesday and located a decent crankbait bite in Scow Canyon in a very particular area of the shoreline . As we continued to seek out this same structure , we caught fish .
Two days later , same weather conditions , my son joined me and I was determined to look professional with information , pretending to guess the correct pattern , talking about the subtlety of presentation , speed of retrieve and like that .
This , I told him , it would be “ Scow weather ,” pre spawn for the largemouths

while the spots would be in the shade zones as well as on the main lake in about 15 – 20 feet of water . Hmmmmm . So this is bass fishing ?
He caught 2 spots on a 1975 model Shad Rap while I , with all of my local knowledge , got skunked . Between us we tried no less than 20 different techniques , zero results .
On our last trip , Ron & I worked the east side with those same zero results . At about 9 a . m ., we moved to the west side and Ron caught 2 spots in 3 casts . Ok , we ’ re dialed in . We worked about 200 yards of shoreline , caught a couple of fish , and then returned to our starting point .
My Senko got a couple and Ron slowed down , then we hit about 75 yards of unproductive water . Dare we return to our original area for a 3rd go at the bass ? Why not ?
Each time we changed presentations , so this time I put down the rubber and tried a shad pattern square bill cranker that dives to about 8 feet . Fallen trees put out my bass on rubber , so this time I was tossing to the open shore , trying to just get a speck of dirt on the rear hook as my lure hit the water .
My second cast , which was almost identical to the first ,
SACRAMENTO RIVER KING SALMON !
got bit half way back to the boat in wide-open water and my retrieve just locked up and the rod tip actually got wet . A truly wild battle ensued and eventually I lipped a largemouth in the 6 + pound range .
Whodathunkit ? Two years ago I managed a largemouth in the 8-pound range on a chatterbait . All other outings produced almost exclusively spots . So , just what does this all mean ? Nothing other than every launch presents new challenges and it ’ s up to us to figure it out .
On a final note , there is another reg about to go into effect . On 1 / 01 / 2018 a 7 year phase-in program will require all boat owners to pass a boater safety program . This is law SB941 and is referred to as the CVOC , which is valid for a lifetime once the course is completed .
Phase in will start with boaters of age 20 and under and over 7 years work its way to age 60 and younger . After that , all persons regardless of age must pass . Phone call inquiries can be addressed to 1-800- 326-2822 and if you ’ re into typing , www . dbw . parks . ca . gov / CVOC .
Next time it just might be time to check out the fall salmon season on the rivers . Seeya then and Tight Lines !
