EAST DELTA
Largemouth Bass Oriented To Moving Water and Shade During Record Heat Wave
STOCKTON - Largemouth bass action in the East Delta continues to be challenging at best with the high water levels from runoff from the tributaries of the San Joaquin River .
The recent triple-digit weather will require the bass to seek cooler water around current and under shade .
The Best Bass Tournaments drew over 100 boats , and although 4 / 5ths of the participants weighed in fish , 22 boats came up empty , emphasizing the difficulty of finding quality fish on the Delta at the present time . The top three places came in at over 17 pounds with the team of John Garrett and Tony Vaughn taking first place at 17.82 pounds with a big fish at 9.00 pounds .
Randy Pringle , the Fishing Instructor and tournament director of Best Bass Tournament said , “ Catching one big fish was the key to

winning the tournament since it has been difficult out there . There was some wind towards the end of the ½ day tournament , and crankbaits , spinnerbaits , and buzzbaits started working in the breeze . The water is still dinghy , and my game plan would be to work further towards the northeast Delta where the water should be clearer .”
Vince Borges of Vince Borges Guide Service and Phenix Rods said , “ The water temperatures have ramped up 5 degrees within a week , and with the triple-digit temperatures holding on for at least 10 days , punching the weeds or throwing frogs are the best bets .”
Alan Fong of the Fishermen ’ s Warehouse in Sacramento noticed a bullfrog on the mats chasing after a lure . He said , “ We caught fish , but nothing over 2 pounds . After we saw the bullfrog , we put on Senkos and landed 25 of the frogs for frog ’ s legs .”

EASTERN SIERRA
Big Wind Impacts Trout Fishing
BRIDGEPORT - ““ The past several days have been very windy in the area so Bridgeport Reservoir hasn ’ t had the usual numbers of anglers on it this week ,” reported Jim Reid at Ken ’ s Sporting Goods . “ The water level has been rising 6 to 8 inches per day and is now up near the airport . I haven ’ t talked to anyone about the public ramp but I did go down there yesterday and it looks to me like there ’ s enough water to launch boats there now . This means that you can launch both at the ‘ Bathtub ’ and the public ramp .”
“ Rainbow Point is still a good place to fish bait and when the wind lays down the trolling is still a good way to go as well . Trollers are using Rapalas , Speedy Shiners , Tasmanian Devils and crawlers . Bait anglers are going with pinched crawlers , night crawlers , Mice Tails and PowerBait ,” advised Reid .
“ Twin Lakes are kicking out some nice fish still , though the wind has been blowing up there quite a bit too . Sometimes there are some coves that are a little more protected from the wind so these are good places to fish .

FRESHWATER

Bait anglers are using Mice Tails , PowerBait and crawlers , trollers are using Rapalas , Needlefish and Speedy Shiners . Fly anglers are having some success stripping streamers like Twin Lakes Specials , wooly buggers and matukas ,” tipped Reid .
“ The East Walker is running at about 880 cfs right now , there ’ s a lot of water coming off the mountain from the snow melt so of course it ’ s ending up in the river for now . There have been a few anglers fishing down there with some limited success . You ’ ll need to focus on the softer water , undercut banks and overhanging willows where fish will be hanging out . Streamers and nymphs with the right drifts might afford you some success ,” concluded Reid .
FEATHER RIVER
Striped Bass Continue To Bite
YUBA CITY - Striped bass continue to provide decent fishing on the Feather River , but boaters must exercise caution with the lower river flows . Current combined releases to the Feather River below the Thermalito Afterbay Outlet are 2,500 cfs . “ Striped bass fishing is still good , but you need to be careful if you ’ re in a boat ,” said Manuel Saldana , Jr ., of MSJ Guide Service . “ I heard that three boats ran aground last week .”
