and Velocity rods.”
Anglers are using a mixture of hoochies,
spinners, spoons and other lures, tipped
with white corn, to hook the kokanee at 30
to 40 feet deep.
During the recent cold spell before the
weather turned very hot, Larry Hemphill,
fishing guide, made a trip to Berrryessa.
“I took a husband-wife team to Berryessa
on Wednesday. What a difference in the
weather from the last trip there, with wind
all day, cloudy and much cooler. The bite
was slower and the bass smaller. We
stayed in the narrows the whole trip.”
“The gentleman ended the trip well on
our last stop, catching a nice bass around
2-1/2 lbs. We caught all 3 species of bass.
We used Robo and Berkley worms, mostly
6 inch. We still caught some bass in the
back of some coves - trying to get out of the
heavy wind,” he said.
“I tried a few topwater baits in the
afternoon for fun and did catch 2 small
bass and missed a bigger one. I’m sure the
top water bite was ok the day before,” he
explained.
The water temperature was 68 to 70
degrees and the water clarity was 2 to 4
feet.

DOBBINS – Few anglers have been
targeting kokanee salmon at Bullards Bar
lately, but Alan Fong of the Fisherman’s
Warehouse made a recent trip up there,
finding top-notch fishing.
“The three of us, including my four-year-
old grandson, caught limits of kokanee while
trolling between 6 and 11 am,” said Fong.
“The fish ranged from 8 to 12 inches long;
we each kept 10 fish in the 10 to 12 inch
range.”
“We hooked the fish at 15 to 25 feet deep
over 300 feet of water,” he noted. “We trolled
with Micro Hoochies and my homemade
Apex-style lures, tipped with white corn.
He noted that Bullards Bar, where the
kokanee are extremely abundant, could
use more fishing pressure to increase the
average size of the fish. There was only one
other boat out targeting kokanee on the day
he fished.
