Sponsered by: A Day on the Delta in a 350fx Fishing Explorer by SeaEagle In the last issue of The Fish Sniffer I told you that there would be a second half to the kayak story. I am glad to report that this one went much better than the first. Over the last several years I have been wanting to take a kayak on the California Delta and fish for stripers. Not only did I think it would be a great challenge but it would allow me to fish water that is not accessible by boat. The water I really wanted to fish is a long distance from any boat launch or any roads that would allow me access to put a kayak in the water. I gave Chris Ditter with HeadRush Sportfishing a call and asked him if he would be willing to put my kayak in his boat a drive me in the general area of where I wanted to fish. It turns out that I called the right guy because he is also an avid kayaker and agreed to take this trip with me. The timing of this trip was right because Chris has been on the delta and having a tremendous amount of success putting his clients on limits of stripers. Not to mention that mother nature was going to cooperate and the wind was only expected to be 5-10 mph along with sunny skies. I met Chris at Korth’s Pirates Lair where he keeps his boat for easy access to the San Joaquin River. I brought my brand new 350fx Fishing Explorer Inflatable Fishing Boat by Sea Eagle. I also had the BP12 Single Stage Electric Pump that runs on a small 12 volt battery. I love the BP12 Single Stage Electric Pump because it takes the guess work out of the equation. This pump allows you to set your desired PSI and it automatically stops when it reaches your desired setting. Taking only minutes to fully inflate the 350fx and the uncertainty of whether it is fully inflated. After inflating the 350fx I loaded it into Chris’s beautiful boat and we were on our way to the area of the delta that I have wanting to fish. It is off of the main river but has a little cut that is to shallow to access by boat. Trust me, it is not an area that you want to try and get a boat in and out of. What looked so appealing is that it has a fairly large body of water behind the shallow water, almost looking like a large pond or pool. I figured that the 350fx we get me through the shallow water and would allow me access to the “pool” of water. It appeared to setup perfectly for largemouth bass as well as stripers. The boat ride took us about 20 minutes and it wasn’t long before Chris and I dropped Infl ate your Fishing Possibilities the 350fx into the water. I paddled over to a point on the main body of water and decided to fish this area first since the outgoing tide was moving pretty good and it setup nicely for stripers. It didn’t take me long to land it but while I was fighting it I had a huge smile on my face. I can’t explain how excited I was because my plan came together just as I hoped. Plus, I was catching stripers with a technique I have never tried before! I worked this area a bit longer and it produced another keeper sized striper. I then paddled over to shallow water and was able to access the pool of water that I had been wanting to fish. Everything was setup perfectly. The tide was going out and the water had a nice current line moving out of the pool. I threw a variety of baits including a top water, swimbaits, and a lipless crankbait into this area. Unfortunately, it didn’t produce but I am convinced that one day it will. I will be out there soon to give this area another chance. The 350fx is 11 feet 6 inch long and 3 feet 3 inch wide which makes it really comfortable to fish out of. I was really impressed with the stability of 350fx. In fact, there was a large boat towing another boat that produced some large waves. The 350fx handled these waves easily without compromising any stability. I also was impressed with how much room the 350fx offers. I was carrying a tackle bag, two fishing rods, a large net, a cooler, boga grip, and a dry bag that had a change of clothes. If you are looking for kayak option that is very affordable, comfortable, and mostly importantly very fun to fish out I would suggest that you consider the 350fx by Sea Eagle.
