FRESHWATER REPORTS
LAKE AMADOR
The Lake Is Full to Brim!
IONE – Inflows from the latest storms
have filled up Lake Amador – and the lake
is expected to start going over the spillway
soon.
Trout continue to offer the best fishing
for shore anglers and boaters. Big fish
honors go to John Lelieur from Modesto,
who landed a 7.84-pound Amador
Lightning Trout.
Big plants of Donaldson strain-rainbows,
Lightning Trout and cuttbows continue to
go into Amador every week. The latest
load of 1,000 pounds of trout was split
between the spillway and Mountain
Springs and the blue docks in two
separate plants.
Leo Salceido and his fishing buddy
reported each landing four rainbows in the
20 inch range on their latest trip to Lake
Amador. “We trolled Hot Steel Rapalas in
the top 15 feet of water,” he said.
The tagged trout derby that started on
November 23 will end on March 3. The
derby features 300 tagged trout and over
$5,000 in cash and prizes. For more
information, call Lake Amador at (209)
274-4739.
AMERICAN RIVER
High Flows Challenge
Steelhead Anglers
SACRAMENTO – Steelhead fishing
was picking up when the Bureau of
Reclamation decided to increase flows on
the American River up to 20,000 cfs.
Reclamation increased the releases
from 15,000 cfs to 20,00 cfs below
Nimbus Dam on February 13 for “flood
control operations,” said Peggy Manza,
Reclamation spokesperson.
When the river was still flowing at 7500
cfs, Jerry Lampkin of TNG Motor Sports
reported decent fishing on the stretch
from Sailor Bar to Sunrise.
“Frank Maxler caught and released a
bright 10 lb. hen steelhead while pulling
Hot Shots,” said Lampkin.
Leo Salceido at Sacramento Pro
Tacker reported catching and releasing
three adult steelhead out and losing
three others while fishing pink
plastic worms at Sailor Bar on his
latest trip before the flows went up.
During the latest spawn at the Nimbus
Fish Hatchery, the staff counted 136
new marked male steelhead and 61 new
marked females.
