“On my latest bass trip, I caught 2
fish the first day and 1 fish the second
day,” said Dave Burruss of Clear Lake
Outdoors. “The largemouths were in the 1
to 2 pound range. I fished with drop shot
rigs and shakey heads in the north end of
the lake. Anglers are also finding success
with Alabama rigs with Keitech swimbaits
and jerk baits.
“Some anglers are finding the bass in 2
to 8 feet of water, while others are hooking
them in super-deep water,” he noted. “The
north end in the Red Bud arm is producing
the best fishing. The water temperature
has only been 46 to 47 degrees.”
Meanwhile, anglers are bagging limits of
feisty bluegill while employing red worms
and small jigs. Most of the crappie are
still holding in deep water, but a few are
starting to appear in shallower water 6 o 8
feet deep.
Burruss hasn’t heard of any anglers
pursuing catfish in the storms, but noted
that the fishing at the mouths of creeks
should get going as the storms leave the
region.

Collins Nearly Full As Spring
Trout Plants Kick Off!
OREGON HOUSE – Spring rainbow
trout plants have begun at Collins Lake,
with 2,000 pounds of hard-fighting
rainbows planted prior to Presidents Day
Weekend.
The fishing was tough at press time, but
is expected to shift into high gear with the
arrival of planted trout.
The latest storms have filled the lake
nearly to capacity. The water level was
only 3 feet from full at press time and
the water surface temperature was 50
degrees. The water clarity is 4 foot of
visibility.

March 1 - 15, 2019
Most anglers are bait fishing from shore
with PowerBait, Mice Tails, worms and
other offerings. Very few anglers have
been trolling lately.
Dell Parker of Yuba City demonstrated
his angling skill by bagging two rainbows
weighing 2-3/4 and 3 pounds while
soaking worms on the beach, reported
Christina Richardson of the Collins Lake
Resort. Adam of Yuba City landed a trout
weighing about 2 pounds while fishing
with chicken liver.
Catfish are also showing in the catches.
A woman nailed a 2 lb. catfish while bait
fishing below the store.
Expect the spotted and largemouth bass
bite to improve in the coming weeks as
the water warms up and the bass move
into the pre-spawn mode.
In other Collins Lake news, the Day Use
picnic area at the swimming beach area
has been expanded for the 2019 season.
LAKE DAVIS
Paul Stoner Wins Ice Fishing
Derby
PORTOLA – Sixty-three anglers turned
out for the annual John and Kelly Pato Ice
Fishing Derby at Lake Davis, braving rain
followed by snow.
1st place went to Paul Stoner, who
caught a rainbow weighing 3.12 lbs. and
measuring 22 inches long. He earned
25.12 points.
2nd place went to Justin Jensen, whose
fish weighed 2.95 lbs. and measured
21.50 inches, earning him 24.45 points.
3rd place went to Richard Crowther,
whose fish weighed 2.16 lbs. and
measured 18 inches, earning him 20.16
points.
Since the derby, very few anglers have
been out ice fishing.
The fishing during the event was “fair,
not hot,” said Jeanne Graham of the J&J
Grizzly Store and Campground Resort.
“It rained for 3 hours and then began
snowing,” said Graham. “Anglers found
the top action while fishing toward Mallard
Cove and Catfish Cove.”
