FRESHWATER REPORTS LAKE AMADOR Lighting Trout Light Up Catches IONE – Lake Amador’s on-site fish hatchery planted a total of 12,100 pounds of trout from mid-October to December 31, 2018 – and is continuing to stock a mixture of Donaldson rainbows, cutbows and lightning trout in 2019. “The fishing has been good on the days when the wind hasn’t bee blowing,” said Elise Lockhart at the Lake Amador Resort. “Anglers brought in a lot of lighting trout, along with Donaldson rainbows and cutbows this week. Big fish honors go to David Burruss from Kelseyville, who caught two lightning trout weighing up to 5.9 pounds while using Power Eggs. Young Walter Brand brought in his lighting trout weighing 3.22 lbs. while throwing a Kastmaster. Ben Dale landed a 3.28 lb. lightning trout, while Kaden Elce bagged a 5.14 lb. lightning trout. Mark Lopez caught a 4.66 lb. lighting trout from the Carson arm on a Kastmaster. Many of those fish were from the 750 lb. load of lightning trout planted at the spillway on December 27. Most were in the 3-6 lb. range. Most anglers are focusing on trout, so catfish and black bass catches have been light over the past couple of weeks. The Lake Amador Trout Derby will run through March 3. The event will feature 300 tagged trout in 3 months – and over $3000 in cash and prizes. There is a $7 one time entry fee. The lake is 26 feet from full and the boat launching facilities are in full operation. - Dan Bacher AMERICAN BASIN/ JENKINSON RESERVOIR Kayakers Brave Sugar Pine for Trout AUBURN – In spite of a recent trout plant by the CDFW, cold water conditions at Sugar Pine Reservoir have created very tough fishing conditions for trout. “On a trip I made there in my kayak, fishing was very slow,” said Cal Kellogg, Fish Sniffer Editor. “The water temperature was only 43 degrees and the water stirred up by the wind froze as it hit the boat.” “I found one spot where the water temperature was one degree warmer, 44 degrees, and caught one 12 inch rainbow and lost another while trolling orange Ex-Cel spoons,” he said. “That’s the only fish I saw caught before I left the lake.” Mike Cunningham Ricci Chavez took his Hobie Kayak to a Bay Area lake this December and at Willfish caught a bunch of crappie and a massive catfish. The CDFW has scheduled a trout plant in Halsey Forebay in Placer County for the week of January 13 to 19, as well as a plant for Fuller Lake in Nevada County the same week. The CDFW last stocked Jenkinson Lake with rainbow trout the week of December 16., Trolling from a boat with nightcrawlers and dodgers and minnow imitation lures or bait fishing with Power Bait, Mice Tails and worms is worth a shot. Bradley Beale landed a 16 inch rainbow weighing 2-1/2 pounds while soaking Power Bait at the boat ramp, reported Debbie at the Sly Park Resort. Another angler landed an 18 inch rainbow weighing 2 pounds while shore fishing. However, no mackinaws have been weighed in at the store lately. LAKE BERRYESSA Winter Bass Fishing Yields Mixed Results NAPA – Black bass fishing has been “really sporadic” at Lake Berryessa, ranging from really good to really slow, depending on the day and the weather, reported Luke Lipanovich at Sweeney’s Sports. “My latest trip produced pretty good action,” said Lipanovich. “We caught and released over 20 fish, including largemouth, spotted and smallmouth bass. The fish averaged 2 to 4 pounds each.” “The fish were all over the water column from 5 to 40 feet deep,” he noted. “We used Senkos, jigs and A-Rigs to hook our fish. The shallow fish were holding off brush piles and the deep fish were holding off rocky points and island tops. We fished the north end of the lake in Putah Creek and in the Narrows.” Larry Hemphill, fishing guide, reported taking a “great young bass fisherman up from Texas attending a bay area family Continued on Pg 7 Bottom Line Tackle Presents Some New Ideas in Trolling Tackle B ottom Line Tackle is a web-based company that designs and sells some very unique and practical fresh and saltwater fishing accessories for Northern California. I have used some of them this past year and they are all of excellent design. I used their n B-21 large trout and salmon spoon at Pyramid Lake several times this year, and caught fish every time.. These 3 ¼ inch spoons have 7 light reflecting surfaces that gives them great action and vibration. The hook is attached by a chain swivel that helps the lure create a very wide wobble that the cutthroats really loved. They offer the B-21 in four colors, and the “bloody frog” was the killer at Pyramid. Their downrigger release is very unique. It comes complete with a no slip stacker for the downrigger cable, a small release clip perfect for trout and kokanee, and all stainless steel hardware. It also has a Hi Vis float incorpo- rated into the line to make your release clip float on the surface so it is easily reachable over the side of the This Pyramid Lake cutthroat was caught on B-21 spoon in “bloody frog” color.
