FRESHWATER Jan 17 - Feb 1, 2019 FRESHWATER REPORTS: CONTINUED FROM PG 7 CLEAR LAKE cont. The air temperature was 31 degrees first thing in the morning and the surface water temperature ranged from 48 to 49 degrees. They didn’t target crappie or bluegill, but anglers are still hooking decent numbers of crappie and large numbers of bluegill in deep water spots on the lake such as the Shag Rock and Anderson Island areas. The bluegill are hitting small jigs and redworms, while the crappie are also grabbing small jigs or swimbaits. COLLINS LAKE Boaters, Shore Anglers Nail Trout OREGON HOUSE – During the Christmas and New Year’s Holiday weeks and since the beginning of the New Year, shore anglers and boat fishermen have concentrated on trout fishing at Collins Lake, landing some beautiful rainbows. Trolling with spoons, spinners or nightcrawlers behind flashers has been a good way to put some trout in the boat. Just ask Colton and Sid Cates of Lincoln, who teamed up to land two rainbows weighing 6 and 5 pounds while trolling spoons at Collins. Shore anglers tossing out PowerBait, nightcrawlers and lures are also experiencing trout success. Jose Contreras bagged a 5-1/2 lb. rainbow while soaking PowerBait off the dam. Jeff Neels of North Highlands also caught a 3 lb. trout from shore, reported Mike Butler from the Collins Lake Resort. Mark and Robert Bers of Sacramento landed five trout weighing 6-1/2, 5-1/2, 5, 2 and 2 pounds while fishing Power Bait, Power Eggs and Rapalas. Just a few bass anglers have been fishing the lake lately. Bass anglers should target the deep water off points and ledges with drop shot rigs, jigs and spoons. Expect to catch mostly spotted bass in the 2 to 4 pound range, along with an occasional largemouth. The spring trout plants will start up in mid-February at Collins. More than 50,000 trout are planted every spring, which means Collins Lake has the largest private planting program north of Sacramento. Thousands of these trout are trophy sized, planted at 3 to 8 pounds and growing even larger. Collins Lake is 30-1/2 feet from maximum pool and the surface water temperature is 55 degrees. DEL VALLE LAKE Trout Bite Breaks Loose! LIVERMORE – The lake temperature at Lake Del Valle has dropped slightly with the water usually clocking in either in the upper forties or the lower fifties. “The trout fishing here became red hot after we had a plant of 1,000 pounds of Mt Lassen trout,” reported Captain Jacob of the Rocky Mountain Recreation Company. “Many of our shore anglers are hooking trout in the marina area either on the west beach or next to the boat ramp. With the water level stabilizing, the fishing has never been better this winter.” “Garlic scented PowerBait or Mice Tails are the best baits to use out here either with chartreuse of fluorescent white colors,” he advised. “Lure enthusiasts are using small Kastmasters or jerkbaits.” “If you have a boat, the shallow waters of the coves are perfect places to find trout. Badger Cove is a favorite for many of our regular fishermen,’ he noted. “The bass bite is still slow because of the drop in temperature, but they are still hitting in Heron Bay where it is deep and has clearer water. Weightless nightcrawlers or Senkos will also work. Alternatively, small shad imitations like Kastmasters Richard Blevins traveled to Collins Lake for some winter trout action recently and nailed a limit of big hard fighting or spinners can get them rainbows. on your line,” he tipped.
