At this time , the north side is open with extremely limited access . The road is open from the entrance to the Los Vaqueros Interpretive Center , which is open on weekends from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm . All trails are currently
closed , except the trail to the dam fishing pier . The south side and marina remain closed until further notice . Stay tuned for updates The most recent trout plant by Mt . Lassen Fish Farm was on Dec . 29 when 21,000 pounds of rainbows were stocked in the lake . The water temperature is currently 60 degrees . The water level is currently at 87,000-acre feet , as of 2 / 21 / 2023 . When the watershed reopens , shore anglers targeting trout can expect to experience the most success using garlic scented PowerBait and nightcrawlers . Trolling with spoons , minnow imitation lures and nightcrawlers behind flashers should also be productive , especially in the backs of coves . Bank anglers and rental boaters in search of stripers should fish cut anchovies or threadfin shad . The South Cove , Cowboy Cove and Howden Cove are among the top spots for stripers . Trollers Pull Out Trout Limits
ANGELS - Trout fishing is going strong at New Melones Lake , where catching limits of rainbows is “ no problem ,” said Monte Smith of Gold Country Sportfishing . “ Mostr of the fish are from 12 to 16 inches long ,” Smith noted . “ A lot of guys are catching their fish in the top 15 feet of water while running sideplaners with Rapalas , Excel spoons and other lures ..” New Melones is holding 1,072,479-acre feet of water , 45 percent of capacity and 75 percent of average . Don Pedro is producing a few king salmon in the 2 to 3 lb . class and limits of rainbow trout , including recent planters and some nice holdovers in the 2 to 3 lb . range , said Smith . “ Many anglers are using kokanee gear , such as dodger and hoochie combos and dodgers and Excel lure combos , to catch the trout ,” he stated . “ Stick close to shoreline and points in the main body coves where the water just a little warmer .. Most of the rainbows are 10 to 15 feet deep .” “ The kings are showing at 50 to 80 feet deep and rolled shad is the number one bait . Since the water is cold , you need to use a slower presentation on both species ,” Smith tipped . Don Pedro is holding 1,545,516- acre feet of water , 76 percent of capacity and 105 percent of average .

Recreation Area Opens with Great Fishing , Heavy Trout Plants
IONE - Trout fishing has been “ really good “ at Pardee Lake for bank anglers and boaters since the popular recreation area opened to fishing on February 17 , said Chelsea Schweder at the Rocky Mountain Recreation Company . “ Anglers reported catching a combined total of 500 trout on opening day ,” said Schweder . Two of those anglers were David and Pat Gomez from Stockton , who teamed up to catch a 7.18 lb trout on a black wooly bugger on one of the rental boats opening day . Another angler , Tim , landed a 9.2 lb . rainbow while fishing a Senko the same day . In addition , he caught another trout and two largemouth bass . The trout action has been boosted by heavy plants of trout . Mt . Lassen Fish Farm stocked 2,000 lbs . of Lightning Trout , 700 lbs . of catchable rainbow trout and 200 lbs . of trophy rainbow trout on Feb . 16 . Then they stocked 2,700 pounds
