H as anyone else had their fishing plans interrupted this year by the weather besides me ? Oh my goodness . I counted five trips cancelled due to wind since the beginning of 2022 . Not to mention a three-day tuna trip I had planned last October when the big blues were biting and then the 30-35 knot winds showed up . Crazy ! But , that is how fishing adventures can be . Maybe the weather is amazing , maybe it isn ’ t . Maybe the fish are biting , maybe they disappeared . If your trip gets cancelled , what do you do ? I like to plan for the next trip . Learn something new , make sure my gear is organized , replace hooks if needed , set up tackle boxes for different species . After the five trips were cancelled this year my fishing friends were beginning to wonder if I was bringing the bad weather , ha ! Well , I chose not to believe that and keep my future reservations . It paid off , we got to go on our three-day

I will start from the beginning before I give you the details of this Big Marlan being hooked off the Coast of San Francisco . I had received a surprise call from my son , Andrew , and he told me that he and his girlfriend Trisha were flying into town and staying for a couple of days . They are both in the Air Force and stationed in South Dakota so getting the opportunity to see them is a blessing . One of the things they wanted to do while they were here was go fishing . We discussed doing some bass fishing on the delta or doing a potluck trip on the ocean . Trisha

had never been to California and never fished the ocean so I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to fish on a charter boat out of the Berkeley so she would be able to see the amazing views like Alcatraz , San Francisco , Golden Gate Bridge , Bay Bridge , and so much more . I was able to reserve a few spots on the California Dawn so the preparation began . I wanted to make sure these two had a great experience but I was a little concerned because Andrew only had been on the ocean one other time and Trisha had never been on the ocean . I wanted to make sure they did not get seasick so I suggested that both of them take some Dramamine prior to the trip . I am glad I did because the wind was blowing and the ocean was quite bumpy . To be honest , I can ’ t remember the last time I have been on the ocean with conditions quite like this . There were not big swells but at times I thought the water looked like a wash machine . The water was going in all different directions and

Big Marlan Foul Hooked Off SF Coast

GONE FISHING by Ernie Marlan

GONE FISHING by Amy Wellenkamp girls tuna trip aboard the infamous Pacific Queen out of Fisherman ’ s Landing in San Diego . As I was packing for the trip I was very excited and nervous as this was my first three-day trip . I brought 5 set ups for everything from 20 pounds to 100 plus . I learned a couple of years ago if you don ’ t bring the big sticks that is for sure what will be biting ! I was fortunate to have landed a 173 pound personal best Bluefin on my 80 pound set up . Most everyone else that hooked up had brought smaller

it was challenging to keep your footing . The boat ride to the fishing spot was around two hours and we arrived to an area where we would target lingcod and rockfish . We had a mixed bag of bait options including live anchovies and an assortment of lures . I thought that starting with the live bait would be the better option because I wanted Trisha and Andrew to have the best chance at catching a lot of fish . The action started fast and furious from the very first drop . Double hook ups with big rock fish to start the morning ! The fishing was epic for what seemed like at least a couple of
