GONE FISHING continued from page 2

Potluck trips that include rockfish , lingcod and halibut are a great way to have a lot of action and fill your freezer . This angler landed this halibut on a potluck trip .

Catching fish is just part of the fishing experience . Good conversation , making lifelong memories and spending time with great people is a what I enjoy most about fishing .

A big smile and big rockfish for Trisha Kleinline . Trisha quickly learned the ropes on her first ocean fishing trip and put on a clinic on how to catch fish !
Photo Courtesy of Ernie Marlan hours but Trisha had the hot hand and was constantly fighting a fish . It was obvious she was a quick learner and a great fisherwoman . We were in the middle of this epic bite and I decided I was going to use a 6oz jig in hopes I could fool a big lingcod . I had a fish slam my lure and it ended up being a quality sized rockfish . As I was unhooking it I lost my balance because the ocean was relentless this point . This is when the Big Marlan was hooked . To clarify , not Marlin but Marlan ( my last name ) but pronounced the same . I have been fishing since I have been in diapers and I have never had this happen before . I was now in a position where I had to stop and think . My mind switched from getting my lure in the water to getting my lure out of my hand . Honestly , I can say my mind really slowed down and I assessed the situation . I had a 6oz lure with a huge treble hook in my thumb . I grabbed the hook and gave it a pull to see if it would
come out . No such luck because the hook went in well past the barb . My next immediate thought is I have to cut my line so I don ’ t have to deal with the rod and reel . I did that and now I just had the lure in my hand . Now what ? Should I cut the split ring so I can get rid of the 6oz ’ s ? Yes , that would be the next best move but after a quick thought I realized I don ’ t have anything on the boat that will do that . Maybe a second pull on the hook with a little more strength will get it out . Nope , no such luck . I wasn ’ t in pain but it was a huge inconvenience . Lol ! At this point I realized I had to seek some help . I knocked on the wheelhouse door and showed Captain Sean ’ s my current position . He asked , “ what did you do ?” I replied , “ I hooked a Marlan !” We both kinda chuckled and he said , “ go find Ben , the deckhand , and he will get it out for you .” I quickly found Ben at the stern of the boat and told him I needed some help .

I thought he understood as I showed him my hand . He knew I was fishing on the bow so we started heading that direction . Remember , we were in the middle of a wide-open bite and I think he thought I was tangled so on our way to bow he stopped a couple times and assisted some anglers with some tangled lines . I was patient because I wasn ’ t in pain and I knew he had to do his job . Once we arrived at the bow that is when he realized he wasn ’ t dealing with a tangle . He said , “ sorry man I didn ’ t hear you say you had a hook in your hand .” He looked at the hook and said , “ I think I can just pull it out with pliers .” In my mind I thought we would use the braided line technique . However , I quickly agreed and said , “ let ’ s do it .” He responded , “ do you want to bite on something as I pull on it ?” I responded , “ no , let ’ s just do it .” He quickly asked , “ do you have a lot of adrenaline going then .” I stated , “ I will be fine .” I think it hurts more now when I am writing this than it actually did when it was happening . Ben grabbed the treble hook with his pliers and gave it two hard pulls and the hook was out ! Once the hook was out that is when it hurt most . It was like a pressure release that lasted just for a few

seconds and then I was pain free . As I spent the next several minutes cleaning and bandaging my finger I was grateful that Ben got it out so quickly . I was also glad that I recently had a tetanus vaccination . This is the story of how a Big Marlan was hooked and released off the coast of the San Francisco . What an amazing day Trisha , Andrew , and I had on the ocean . Trisha was the star on our team and caught a bunch of big rockfish . Plus , she had better sea legs than both of the Marlans !
