They were fishing shallow water that ranged from 60-100 feet of water while fishing with Patriot Sportfishing , Avila Beach . Contributor can think of where you can catch 10 to 40 beautiful Lahontan Cutthroat trout from 3 to 9 pounds , and be a little disappointed you didn ’ t get one over 10 pounds . Every year people catch trout over 20 pounds ! Twice last year my boat had over 20 fish landed with at least 4 over 10 pounds , and the largest came in at 18 ½ pounds ! And the wonderful thing is this fishery isn ’ t in Russia or South America , it is 35 miles north of Reno and only about 2 ½ hours from my home in Colfax . Pyramid is a huge desert lake that is 15 miles long and 11 miles wide , and covers over 125,000 acres , almost as big as Lake Tahoe . It is fed by the Truckee River that flows out of Tahoe and ends up in Pyramid . The lake is over 300 feet deep and is surrounded by awesome , rugged mountains with nary a tree on them . There are also some tremendous rock formations , called tufa formations , that are created by springs and hot springs that erupt around the lake and then dry into spectacular shapes . There is a huge “ Pyramid ” shaped rock formation on the east side of the lake that gave the lake it ’ s name . Pyramid Lake is owned and managed by the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe . As a part of the reservation , you don ’ t need a Nevada fishing license , but you do need a tribal fishing license . Permits are needed for camping , fishing and boating on the lake . You can now buy all the needed permits online . There are specific fishing regulations intended to keep this tremendous fishery alive and well . There is a slot limit for the fish you can keep : You can keep 2 trout between 17 to 20 inches , one trout over 24 inches , but a net total of only 2 trout per day . No bait , eggs , or scent is allowed to be used on the lake . You must also use barbless hooks , limited to 2 single , 2 double or 2 treble hooks per lure . Some of the best lures to use at Pyramid are larger spoons and plugs . My favorites are Doctor Spoons , Silver Horde Spoons , Apex lures , Flatfish , Mag Lips and especially the Lyman plugs in bright colors .
