MONTEREY BAY
Rockfish , Lingcod and Halibut Offer Top Fishing
SANTA CRUZ – Limits of rockfish and a few lingcod are the reward for anglers going on charter and private boats off the Monterey and Santa Cruz Coast , while private boaters are still bagging halibut in Monterey Bay . Fishing for rockfish and lingcod has been productive near Davenport and
Franklin Point , reported Todd Fraser of Bayside Marina . The bottomfish are hitting an array of shrimp fly jigs baited with squid , jigs , bars , swimbaits and live bait . Halibut continue to be caught near 4 Mile Beach , Capitola and Pajaro . Boaters are drifting and trolling live bait for the flatties . “ There have been a few salmon caught on the Santa Cruz Wharf ,” said Fraser . “ The hatchery fish have been in the shallow water since the rain hit .” Tuna fishing remains tough off Santa Cruz . “ The two boats that went looking for tuna yesterday did not find any fish ,” said Fraser . “ One boat went to 36 ’ 40 / 122 ’ 02 out to 36 ’ 40 / 122 ’ 50 and found blue warm water but not much life . The majority of marine life was closer to shore near the point of Monterey . The other boat went through the Davenport Fingers to Ano Nuevo . but did not see any tuna .” Chris Arcoleo at Chris ’ Fishing Trips in Monterey said rockfish trips are producing consistent limits of rockfish off the Monterey County Coast . “ The anglers smashed the rockfish at Point Sur on a couple of trips there this week ,” said Arcoleo . “ They bagged a lot of red rockfish and a few lingcod . Local trips to Carmel and Cypress Point care yielding mostly yellowtail rockfish . Anglers are catching the larger rockfish and the lingcod on bars and bars . The guys who know how to bottomfish are doing very well .” The Checkmate checked in with 150 rockfish ( limits ) for 15 anglers on Saturday , September 24 . The Checkmate came back with 190 rockfish ( limits ) and one lingcod for 19 anglers on September 23 , while the Caroline reported 150 rockfish ( limits ) for 15 anglers the same day . Stagnaro ’ s Fishing Trips in Santa Cruz reported limits and near limits of rockfish . One recent 7-hour trip produced limits of rockfish , 2 lingcod and 1 halibut , while another trip yielded 249 rockfish for 29 anglers .
