Our boat was one of two boats out of 7 boats below the outlet that caught fish .” “ Yesterday , the 3 anglers fishing with me caught two kings weighing 11 and 16 pounds out of the two hook-ups we had . One of the fish was bright , while the other was dark . We side drifted roe under bobbers ,” he observed .

“ To date , this is the worst salmon season I ’ ve seen over the past 10 years on the Feather ,” added Leonard . “ And fishing on the Sacramento is even worse than Feather . There are a lot of variables that could be responsible , including the lack of cold water . I feel overharvesting on the ocean also factors in . It seems that if the fish are trucked to saltwater , there is a horrible river season and a good ocean salmon season .” Pennie Crawshaw at the Feather River Fish Hatchery said they have already spawned 120 pairs of springrun Chinooks to date . “ There are 389 males and 487 females in the holding tank now ,” she stated . “ We are spawning until September 30 .. We ’ re seeing a really good showing of springers ; they are really beautiful , healthy looking fish . I also received a message that the DWR river crews found a few redds and spawned out fish on the river .” She said she has seen only a couple of fall run Chinooks “ here and there ” on the river so far this season .

This triggered the closure of the adult Chinook salmon fishery on the main stem of the Klamath River from the Highway 96 Bridge to the mouth of the Klamath River at the Pacific Ocean . The fishery at the mouth of the Klamath closed the same day , Sept . 5 , and will remain closed to all fishing for the rest of the calendar year . The rest of the lower main stem of the Klamath River below the Highway 96 Bridge at Weitchpec will remain open to the harvest of jack ( two-year old ) Chinook salmon ( less than or equal to 23 inches ). All adult Chinook salmon caught must be

immediately released and reported on an angler ’ s report card . Anglers may still fish for adult Chinook salmon in other reaches of the Klamath Basin , including the main stem of the Klamath River above Weitchpec and the entire Trinity River until the closure of those fisheries . Anglers may monitor the quota status of open and closed sections of the Klamath and Trinity rivers by calling the information hotline at ( 800 ) 564-6479 . 21 Lb . Catfish Tops September Catches

BYRON – If you want to catch a big channel catfish , South Cove is the place to go . Just ask Javier Barraza of Oakland , who landed a catfish weighing 21.17 pounds while soaking chicken liver in the South Cove . Catfish plants continue at the reservoir . Tsai Enterprises has stocked a total of 5,000 pounds of catfish this year , with one more plant of 1000 pounds slated to go into the lake . Trout plants are expected to start in October after the water temperature cools down , “ People have caught a lot of catfish lately , including many in the 5 to 6 pound range ,” reported Bud Hartman of the Los Vaqueros Marina . “ The South Cove , Howden and Cowboy Cove are producing the best action . The top baits are chicken livers , anchovies and nightcrawlers ..” On September 18 , Yekam El Nakar had a great day fishing in the rain when he caught a stringer of big channel cats . Anglers are also hooking good numbers of striped bass at the lake . “ We ’ re seeing an occasional limit of keeper stripers , but most of the fish anglers are hooking are shakers ,” said Hartman . “ Fishermen are doing the best fishing anchovies from the marina pier or from a rental boat . Cowboy Cove , Howden Cove and the South Cove and the dam are among the spots where stripers are being caught .” The surface water temperature is currently 70 degrees . The water level is currently at 83,000 acre feet . The water clarity has been good except for windy days .
