Trollers Battle Chunky Rainbows
PORTOLA - Bret Brady of Bare Bones Guide Service recently had a chance to fish Davis Lake for a couple of days and reported topnotch fishing while trolling there . The anglers in his boat had no problem catching limits of quality trout each day . “ The fishing was incredible ,” said Brady . “ A lot of really nice fish are showing . It was easy to hook 30 to 40 fish each day . There were two classes of fish – the larger ones measuring 20 to 22 inches long and the smaller ones averaging around 15 inches . Both the larger and smaller fish were really thick-bodied .” They caught their fish while trolling with nightcrawlers behind Sep ’ s watermelon dodges , as well as while using Z-Rays and Needlefish in fire tiger colors from the surface to 10 feet deep . “ While I was there , we didn ’ t see another fisherman fishing from a boat or the bank ,” he emphasized . Lake Davis is holding 48,691 acre feet of water , 59 percent of capacity and 78 percent of average .

The Bite is On for Both Fly Fisherman and Trollers
Eagle Lake fishing is good to great . Trolling is good . Fly fishing is hot . If it is too windy for fly fishing , we are trolling off Eagles Nest and Wildcat Point . Troll red / gold Thomas Buoyant and other spoons at 10-15 feet deep off Eagles Nest on the east shoreline . Off the Wildcat Point area , troll orange Jay Fair flies in shallow water 10-20 feet deep or under over structure . Be careful , there is plenty of structure . It gets shallow fast and we often find ourselves in 5 feet of water and quickly move out deeper . But the fish are there . If you don ’ t know the bottom structure in these areas , don ’ t fish there . You can also troll the Jay Fair set ups just under the surface in 10-20 feet of water without worrying about the water being too shallow . Red / gold and red dot frog spoons are also effective off Wildcat . Troll them 10-15 feet deep in 20-40 feet of water . Fly fishing has been great . We are putting limits in the box every trip nymphing on rock piles on the west side of the lake between The Broccoli Tree and Wildcat Point . We are approaching the 4 pound mark with fish in the high 3 pound range landed this week . Brett Brady , Barebones Guide Service , is not finding the numbes of king salmon on Lake Oroville but he is putting his clients on big fish . The bite should continue to get better and the numbers should show up soon .

at Willfish Bait and Tackle . “ The trout are 35 to 45 feet deep , while the salmon are 50 to 70 feet .” 3 fish over 7 pounds have been reported by anglers over the past couple of weeks , including a salmon weighing 8 pound , 6 ounces landed by Bill Wagner while fishing a Speedy Shiner at 70 feet with Jerry Lampkin of TNG Motor Sports Guide Service . They also landed a dozen trout between the river channel and dam that day . Another angler hitting the lake reported catching 12 trout to 15 inches while trolling the North Fork between Peninsula Campground and Rattllesnake Bar . One customer , Steve Brown , also reported catching a 7 pound king one trip and a 9 pounder on another , said Newton . Fishing at Folsom is “ fair ” for spotted and largemouth bass , according to Don Paganelli of Paganelli ’ s Bass Fishing Experience . “ There is a bit of a topwater bite in the morning around areas with flooded trees , willows and island tops ,” advised Paganelli . “ After that , anglers are fishing drop shot rigs and Carolina-rigged worms in pumpkin red flake and Aaron ’ s Magic at 10 to 20 feet deep .” Folsom Lake is holding 862,626 acre feet of water , 88 percent of capacity and 111 percent of average . The lake level is 455 feet in elevation , 11 feet from full .
