AMERICAN RIVER / SACRAMENTO AREA
Low Flows of 550 Cfs Continue
SACRAMENTO – Fishing pressure for salmon , steelhead and striped bass has been very light on the American River , due to the very low water conditions . The Bureau of Reclamation continues to release only 550 cfs below Nimbus Dam to “ conserve storage ,” according to T . Washburn , Reclamation spokesperson . King salmon fishing is very slow on the Sacramento River in the metropolitan area with warm water temperatures , but a few dedicated anglers who put in the hours are picking up fish . Fishing may pick up with the arrival of a cooling trend that will drop the water temperature down . “ I haven ’ t heard of many salmon caught locally , but one customer fishing from a boat below the Knights Landing Bridge reported catching two salmon weighing 15 and 18 pounds today while anchor fishing with Flatfish ,” said Dennis Pfanner at Sacramento Pro Tackle . Sand Cove continues to produce maybe 1 or 2 salmon for the 20 or so anglers fishing there each day . They ’ re tossing out Flying C spinners for the best success .. Two locals also reported catching a couple of keeper stripers while fishing bloodworms from shore at Bryte Beach , said Pfanner .

Trolling or anchor fishing with Flatfish on 1 ounce weights in the current with no spreaders at the Pioneer Bridge , Sherwood Marina and other areas on the river . is worth a shot also . Catfish are your most consistent local angling prospect at this time . Anglers can head out in the early morning and evening hours to catch channel catfish in the Sutter Bypass and a myriad of Delta sloughs . Toss out chicken livers , sardines , anchovies and prepared baits or live minnows for the catfish . The CDFW ’ s Fishing in the City program also stocks local ponds with channel catfish ( April - October ) and rainbow trout ( November - March ). No fishing clinics are scheduled at this time .
