SACRAMENTO - Striper fishing is going strong on the San Joaquin River both above and below the Antioch Bridge , while fishing on the West Bank of Sacramento River has tapered off . “ The five anglers drifting minnows with me on my latest trip landed 40 stripers , keeping 10 keepers to 10 pounds and releasing the rest on the San Joaquin River ,” said Jeff Soo Hoo of Soo Hoo Sport Fishing . “ The fish were schoolies averaging 5 to 6 pounds each . It was an amazing time on the Delta - and we even headed in before the best part of the outgoing tide .” On a previous trip , Soo Hoo reported solid great fishing on the San Joaquin also for two adults and three children . “ The kids did fantastic ,” said Soo Hoo . “ They went from not wanting to hold fish , to catching and holding them by the end of the day . Not everyone wanted to take home fish , so we kept what they wanted and released them for those who opted . The kids were worn out , so we called it and headed for the barn ..” “ The fishing has slowed down on the West Bank of the Sacramento , but trollers who know what they are doing are catching 15 to 20 stripers per boat on the San Joaquin and in Montezuma Slough , keeping their limits and releasing the rest ,” confirmed Craig Newton at Willfish Bait and Tackle in Auburn . “ Most anglers are trolling with Yo-zuri Crystal Minnows in an array of colors .” The 73rd Annual Rio Vista Bass Derby will be back on October 8 through 10 after a hiatus in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic . There will be a $ 3000 first place prize for the striped bass closest to the target length in the adult division . Information is available at www : bassfestival . org .

Rio Vista Bass Derby Set for October 8-10 RIO VISTA – Hold on to your fishing poles , the Rio Vista Bass Derby is back for a 73rd year ! This Rio Vista tradition is an integral part of Rio Vista history and the Rio Vista Bass Derby & Festival . Way back in the beginning of the derby , the stories passed down through history are that over 10,000 people attended the derby ! The days of 10,000 people fishing the derby are long gone and probably for a good reason , but we have had well over 20,000 people attend our Festival over the 3 days and 400- 1000 derby participants . The derby runs for 3 days , starting on Oct 8 at 6:00 am to Oct 10 at 3:00 pm . Contestants fish for striped bass , salmon & sturgeon from Sacramento to the Bay on the Sacramento River . The California Striped Bass Association- Isleton Chapter is the official Weigh Master of the derby and will run the weigh station each day . The weigh station will be located at 1 Main Street , next to Rio Vista City Hall and the city dock . This area is easily accessible to the newly renovated City of Rio Vista Boat Launch . Our BIG announcement is that salmon WILL be included as a category in the derby . Earlier this year , we announced the removal of the category due to the serious decline of the salmon run and changes that were made to our permit by California Department of Fish and Wildlife . We continued to discuss including salmon as it is an important part of the derby . After a recent discussion with the CSBA , they shared some fishing insight that prompted the committee to reverse the decision and include salmon in the derby but with changes to the rules to meet the CDFW permit guidelines . Per the CDFW permit , our derby rules must be : “ Anglers must keep the first two ( 2 ) legal size salmon caught .” The great prize money is back ! We plan to have at least 15 places for the striper category with the big money prizes for the first 3 winners . Striped Bass : 1st place winner is $ 3000.00 , 2nd place - $ 1500 , 3rd Place - $ 1000 plus an additional 12 places of
