LAKE OROVILLE / THERMALITO AFTERBAY
Lake Is Only 22 % of Capacity
OROVILLE – Lake Oroville is holding only 788 , 075 acre feet of water , 22 percent of capacity and 35 percent of average . The water level is 628 feet in elevation , 272 feet from maximum pool , the lowest level since the lake filled in 1968 . Fishing pressure has been extremely light in the unprecedented low water conditions . All boat ramps at Lake Oroville , including the Bidwell Canyon , Spillway , Loafer Creek and Limesaddle facilities , remain closed to boat launching as the lake level continues to drop . On the Lake Oroville Fishing Reports Facebook Page , Dave Koistinen reported on his latest fishing adventure at Oroville : “ I got the kayak in at the dam at the big O today . I trolled around the Bidwell Canyon point and back to the dam . I fished with a 30 ft . setback 75 ft . deep at 1.8 mph , but had no bites . I marked fish at 75 feet , but there were no take downs .” “ The surface water temperature is 75 degrees . There is still some mud to deal with ; I made my own walkway . I was off the water at 12:00 noon ,” he concluded . Boaters can still target largemouth bass and landlocked steelhead in the Thermalito Afterbay , but fishing reports there have been few and far between lately .

LOS VAQUEROS RESERVOIR
Channel Catfish Plants Bolster Angling Success
BYRON - Big , bold channel catfish continue to be stocked in Los Reservoir , boosting the catches at this popular lake . The lake management stocked another 1,000 pounds of catfish in the lake on September 17 . No big catfish have been weighed in since a local angler , Kheim , landed a 16-1 / 2 lb . catfish a couple of weeks ago , but there are giants out there on Los Vaqueros . The water temperature is 71 degrees , but it is expected to cool down with the arrival of cooler weather . The water level is currently at 104,000-acre feet . The clarity has been good except for windy days , according to the Los Vaqueros Marina . Anglers are hooking the catfish while fishing chicken livers , anchovies and worms in the South Cove and off the pier . Cowboy Cove and Oak Point are also good spots to target catfish . Striped bass , holdover rainbow trout and an occasional largemouth bass are also showing in the catches . When the lake is calm and rental boaters are able to get on the lake , some anglers are catching limits of trout and striped bass . The trout can be caught while bait fishing with PowerBait and nightcrawlers or trolling with nightcrawlers behind flashers and
minnow imitation spoons and other lures . Some of the better spots to target include Peninsula Cove , Cowboy Cove , and Howden Cove . The stripers are hitting best on anchovies and chicken livers , although some anglers pick them up while casting rainbow trout swimbaits or Rapalas . Most of the keeper stripers being caught now are in the 18 to 22 inch range . Shore anglers are also picking up quality rainbow trout while using PowerBait and other offerings in the South Cove . If you are looking to rent a boat , it is always a good idea to call ahead to check current wind conditions . Rental boats are first come first serve . Weekends and some weekdays sell out quickly . REDDING / RED BLUFF
Big Kings Are Hitting Upriver
RED BLUFF - The Sacramento River from Chico to Anderson seemingly has salmon holding in every hole most days . The water temperatures are cooling from their high point of 65 degrees a few weeks back , and they are now ranging from 58 degrees to 63 degrees with the colder water being in the Anderson area . The salmon run has been pretty good overall , but we ’ re seeing more dark salmon for this time of the season . The salmon in the Corning areas are still cutting really good in spite of their darker exterior appearance .
The flows have remained steady at 6,800 cfs . at Keswick Dam , and word has it that we ’ ll see another bump in flows in October which will be a welcomed to say the least . Not because we don ’ t have plenty of water already , but because it should pull the remaining fall salmon up river into the Anderson area where we ’ ll be concentrating our final efforts to catch fall run Kings .
It ’ s still early in the year for our hatchery run of steelhead , but we are seeing a few being caught although we aren ’ t targeting them specifically just yet . They will start to increase in numbers just before we start our salmon / steelhead combo trips in late October through the end of the late fall salmon season on Jan 1st . Hanging roe in the Barge Hole has been a favorite technique , but drift fishing and back trolling plugs has also been in play all season again this year . The salmon have been moving through the Sacramento River all summer and most of them will be staging in the Anderson area before heading 5 miles up Battle Creek to the Coleman National Fish Hatchery where they will be spawned in late October and November . Last year over 30,000 kings returned to the hatchery , and I suspect this season we ’ ll see many more . Meeting the fall return quotas at Coleman shouldn ’ t be a problem once again this year .
