Six Hours to fish : Bodega Bay Salmon

When the ocean salmon season opened in the San Francisco Region on June 26th , I watched on social media as recreational and party boat anglers laid the complete smackdown on jumbo size fish .

T his spate of hot weather has been very uncomfortable and makes me want to stay home instead of going out in the heat . But I had a hankering for barbequed kokanee , so Bridget Looney and I headed to Bullards Bar Reservoir early on

Ocean salmon fishing was in mind when I purchased the RH Seahawk Sport from Auburn Outboard Marine . While a 16 foot boat isn ’ t exactly the best platform for ocean salmon fishing , it certainly is doable when the conditions are right . Prior to this boat , I took my 14 foot Fisher into the ocean on flat calm days . With a day off and the forecast showing calm winds and small swells for Monday July 5th , Brian Arimoto and I left Sacramento for Bodega Bay with plans to cash in on the excellent salmon fishing . But , we also wanted to give rockfishing and possibly halibut fishing a shot later in the afternoon . Launching out of Westside at 11:30 , we charged into lumpy seas heading west from Bodega Head . Our destination was deep water where good amounts of salmon were landed over the weekend . After reaching 200 feet of water , I dropped the gear in while Brian piloted the boat . One rod was sent down with a Krippled Anchovy behind a triangle flasher to 115 feet . The other rod was sent down with a BigFishMike ’ s Uncle Percy spoon to 120 feet . We continued due west into deeper water ,

Hot Weather and Hot Kokanee at Bullards Bar

Saturday morning . We were up at 3:30 am and it was still 72 degrees at my home in Colfax . We were on the water and heading towards Garden Point on the lake by 5:30 am . We launched the Fish Sniffer Rogue Jet 21 Coastal at the Dark Day boat
Paul Kneeland and Bridget Looney fished out of the Fish Sniffer Rogue Jet 21 Coastal on Bullards Bar . They scored nice limits of kokanee while trolling at 40-50 feet deep .

marking sporadic bait and fish . The weather for the day was scheduled to be fairly calm with a light breeze . Well , that really wasn ’ t what the actual conditions were . Friends and family know that I get sick easily . Especially if I don ’ t take any form of anti-nausea medication . And of course , I took nothing that day due to
ramp . The lake is way down , but the ramp is still in good shape and even still has a dock in the water . We started fishing across from Garden Point on the west side of the lake near the steep wall that runs north and south .

Gone Fishing by Paul Kneeland

The water temp was 83 degrees . We started fishing along the wall in 100 to 200 feet of water . There were fish on the graph everywhere at 40 to 50 feet deep – almost constant marks on the finder . We started catching fish immediately and it never let up . We started with a Paulina Peak pink / chrome dodger with a pink spinner hoochie , a chartreuse Vances dodger with a purple / green hoochie , and an orange Paulina Peak dodger with an orange Arrow Spin spinner , all with shoepeg
