gone a bit deeper now around 70 ’. We ’ re doing very well on limits of rainbows . I ’ m mostly using small spoons , nickel and light colored spoons . Trout and king ’ s are feeding on very small shad the size of guppies . Some fish do have large bait fish around 4 ” and even 5 ” in them . We are still getting a few brown ’ s some are really good size . Rainbows are starting to get copepods but are expected this time of year .
The two most active guides Alex Ross and Jeff Goodwin are doing very well with kokanee , rainbows and king ’ s if you want to get a lot of fish you may want to book a trip with them . The bite has been changing from the morning and afternoon even with the 110 °+ temperatures . There are opportunities for multiple limits of rainbows before 10:00am . Overall some great fishing .
Lake Tahoe
Kokanee , Macks , and Rainbows
Lake Tahoe – Kokanee season is here ! Tahoe Sport Fising has officially switched over to targeting the kokanee salmon . If you are unfamiliar with this particular species we commonly refer to it as “ the candy of the lake ” as we think it is the best thing to eat out of the lake . It is a cold reliant , land locked sockeye salmon . Tahoe Sport Fishing is currently fishing shallower than normal to target the kokanee bite . We are trolling about 45-70 feet . We use corn kernals as our bait for kokanee on all of our fishing charters . We are still seeing mackinaws ( the biggest came in at 10 lbs !) and pulled up a few rainbows in the past week , but the kokanees have been the top catch as of late

corn soaked in Pro Cure Kokanee special scent on the hooks . We never changed rigs all day . We caught kokanee on them all at the same rate . I put out 2 rigs on the Canon downriggers , and before I could get the third one down , we had a fish on ! It was so hot and heavy that I finally stopped putting out the third rod . It just wasn ’ t necessary . The kokanee were all over the lake and all seemed to be very hungry ! Most of the fish were from 10 to 11 inches , with a few at 8-9 that we released . At one point I went down to 75 feet deep to see if I could find bigger Kokanee , but no luck … still catching the 10 to 11 inchers . I made a couple passes at the same spot , and then

just started trolling north towards Mill Creek . We managed to get out of the hordes of fish and actually had time to smoke my pipe and have a cup of coffee . But we did continue catching kokanee , although at a slower pace ! One of the highlights of the morning was when we released a small kokanee , and before it could right itself , there was a flash overhead and a big bald eagle zoomed down 25 feet behind the boat and snatched the unlucky fish off the water ! We stopped fishing at about 9:30 with 20 kokanee in the box – all small but fat . A couple of the larger ones had eggs in them telling me they are going to spawn this year . All the fish were in great shape , very bright silver and round bodied and full of fight . That evening we had barbequed kokanee on the grill , and 2 nights later Bridget made excellent kokanee tacos ! If you want to introduce someone to fishing , especially young kids , Bullards Bar is the place to go . You will catch lots of fish , and the kids won ’ t have time to get bored . Plus the lovely emerald water in the lake is great to swim in to cool off ! But if it is still hot , and we have about 3 more months of heat , my suggestion is to get to the lake early , get your limits and get back to the air conditioning !
