off the bottom by shore fishers . Rick Allerton and Family of Modesto caught 14 trout and a big crappie off the rental dock . It was a good showing of what can be done without a boat . The early morning seems to the best time , then the trout take a siesta until about dinner time . Mason from San Jose was trolling a Firetiger SpeedyShiner about 44 ft down when he hooked a 3-1 / 4lb beauty of a rainbow trout . The Walrath Family from Ukiah brought in a limit starring a chunky 6.5 pound rainbow trout fishing along the shoreline near the dam using a Junebug and yellow PowerBait . Yuriy Kolomyza of Roseville also caught his 6.75 lb lunker trout by the dam using PowerBait . Marquise from Sacramento caught a nice catfish in the late evening using sardines . Zach & Cody Madewell of Paradise reeled in a 5.5 lb catfish in Elmer ’ s Cove using hotdogs . Catfish will inhale just about anything stinky dropped along a muddy bottom . The biggest catfish I ’ ve seen come out of Collins Lake this year was caught , and released , by Earl Hudson from Antioch back on June 16 . Earl broke some traditional catfish clichés , reeling in this 22 pound behemoth mid-day while using a Rat-L-Trap . On the bass front there ’ s a healthy bite out on the east side and in and among the coves . David Delgado reported that he and his friend Justin Leonard caught and released 7 Spots and Largemouth in total using spoons , Roboworms and a Ned-rig all before 10 am and mostly out on the east side near the islands ( watch your props folks , it ’ s shallower than we ’ re used to for June !). The lake is currently 47 ft from full ; In a normal year we might expect a level like this mid-November at the end of the Irrigation Season . The surface temperature is up around 78 ° F and the lake surface area is down around 575 acres ( it ’ s about

1000 acres at spill ). Our main ramp remains open , although we expect in the next couple weeks to only have one paved lane for launch . The lake is busy on Saturdays and Sundays but weekdays , especially before noon , are still pleasant . The same is true of camping ; you ’ ll be hard pressed to find an open site on a summer weekend but there are still tent sites and even a few hookups available mid-week , especially for shorter rigs . Even with these drought conditions , decent fishing persists for the skilled angler , and even a beginner early in the morning or with the right luck , can still land a lunker .

DAVIS LAKE
Bait Tossers Find Top Rainbow Action
PORTOLA – Trolling for trout has slowed down at Lake Davis , with the best results going to anglers fishing PowerBait from shore and a boat . “ Shore anglers are catching goodsized trout while fishing Power Bait and worms off Mallard early and late in the day ,” said Jeanne Graham at J & J ’ s Grizzly Store and Camping Resort . “ Fishermen are averaging about 3 to 4 fish per rod . Most of the holdover fish range from 15 to 21 inches ” Ed Dillard , fishing guide , has been finding trout success while anchoring up and fishing PowerBait off Big Island . “ His clients have been catching limits of rainbows over 17 inches ,” said Graham . “ They have also been releasing planter rainbows .” Fly fishing enthusiasts are taking advantage of the damsel fly and hex hatches that have been taking place at Davis . Graham hasn ’ t heard any black bass and catfish reports over the past couple of weeks . For the brown bullhead catfish , she suggested using nightcrawlers and prepared catfish baits . The fish range from 1 to 2 pounds on average . For largemouth bass , anglers should toss out swimbaits , jigs , plastic worms and top water baits around weeds and structure .

EAGLE LAKE
Fly Fisherman and Trollers Catching Trout
LASSEN COUNTY - Fly fishing is still hot . All my clients are fly fishing , whether the can cast a fly rod or not . If they cannot cast , we cast the fly for them . From there it ’ s just a matter of paying attention to the indicator and setting the hook when it moves , We help , they learn . We are anchoring up in shallow water , 7-10 feet deep , and nymphing . We had limits on every trip out last week , plus we released , lost , and missed many fish . The water temperature is warming and the Eagle Lake Trout will not be available in shallow water where nymphing takes place for much longer . They will move to deeper , cooler , more comfortable water for the summer months . In October they should move back into shallower water when we can again cast flies for them . Trolling is currently good in 25- 40 feet of water off Wildcat Point and Eagles Nest . Troll your spoons 15-25 feet deep . Needlefish , Excel , Thomas Boyant , and Speedy Shiner lures in Red / gold , red / pearl , and red dot frog patterns work well . Start trolling early . The trolling bite is best before the sun hits the water . Adjust your baits deeper as the morning wears on . If you want to book a trip , contact me at 916-201-4648 . Whether you are fishing with me or not , don ’ t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about fishing , camping , or lodging at Eagle Lake .
