ALMANOR FISHING REPORT
Browns and Bows Best Bet
CHESTER - Ninety degree temps are on the menu again this week as water temps are reaching into the high 70 ’ s . Water level is at 4482 ’ approximately three feet below last year on the same date ; clarity fluctuates between 10-18 ’. Both USFS public ramps are open and useable ; expect delays when returning from fishing as boat traffic is heavy . Fish have migrated into deeper water in search of cooler water ; trollers are fishing in 40-50 foot of water , fishing 30-45 on the wire . Slow trolling ( one mph ) crawlers and grubs remain your best shot at catching fish . The bite is good early and slows as the sun comes up ; A-Frame , Big Cove , Dorado , Big Springs and the East Shore are all holding fish . While the Hex Hatch is slowing , you can still get in on some late season action targeting fish along the West Shore from Canyon Dam to Almanor West . Pond Smelt are showing up in larger numbers along the rocky shorelines . Bank fishermen are catching smaller fish around Canyon Dam using Power Bait and crawlers . Hamilton Branch remains your best shot at catching a quality fish . You can expect minimal delays on our roadways leading to Plumas County and all of our campgrounds and businesses are open . A friendly reminder to all fishermen , the warm temps put additional stress on these fish especially the larger guys . I am a big advocate for catch and release and encourage the release of all trophy fish . If you catch a once in a lifetime fish and choose to release it please take extra precautions when handling , don ’ t get your fingers close to the gills , keep the fish in

the water for a quick picture and release ASAP . Return it gently to the water via your coated net , if it struggles , grab it firmly by the tail belly down and get water passing through the gills . I like to use my electric trolling motor and hold the fish by the tail heading the same direction as the boat . Lastly I have a net on my boat that has a scale built into the handle and allows us to weigh fish harmlessly . Quite often I see pictures of fish that are going to be released hanging on a scale by the mouth ; these scales harm the trout and should be avoided if you are releasing .

Catfish and Trout Lead Summer Catches
IONE – Despite the hot summer weather , Matt Stender from San Jose landed a 9.6 lb . cutbow trout while fishing off the Dam at Lake Amador with a yellow Mepps spinner on June 28 . “ This is a heck of a catch for this time of year , but I have been
hearing that quite a few trout are being caught off the blue dock in 40 to 50 feet of water ,” said Elizabeth Lockhart at the Lake Amador Resort . “ Lots of catfish are coming in too !.” Trout plants will not resume until late October when the water temperature cools down . Anglers interested in pursuing channel catfish should fish from shore or from boats with chicken livers , anchovies , nightcrawlers and other offerings providing the top success . Bass fishing is best for anglers fishing in the early morning and late evening hours with top water lures , including Pop-Rs and Zara Spooks , off major lake points . Night fishing is best for anglers tossing out dark plastic worms with rattles and other high
profile lures . The summer gate hours of 5:00 a . m . to 7:00 p . m . Monday through Thursday , 5 to 10 on Friday , and 5 to 9 on Saturday are now in effect .

SMUD is stocking Union Valley , Loon Lake and Icehouse Reservoir with trout
SACRAMENTO – As summer starts and folks get anxious to get out and enjoy the outdoors , SMUD is again stocking three Sierra reservoirs with rainbow trout . The fish planting starts in June and runs into August . SMUD will stock 25,000 pounds of fish at Union Valley , Loon Lake and Ice House reservoirs in El Dorado County . The reservoirs are part of SMUD ’ s Upper American River Project ( UARP ), which provides about 15-20 percent of SMUD ’ s electricity demand in a typical year . Surveys say fishing tops the reasons folks visit the Crystal Basin Recreational Area , and the trout plants enhance angling opportunities for the public . On
