With the warm weather starting to pick up speed , and a hot week coming ahead , fly fishing in the Lower American River is starting to diversify as April is coming to a close . There are multiple reports of Striper being caught in various pockets along the river as well as late spring Steelhead , along with evidence of Shad around discovery park . I have personally been having a hard time picking between focusing on a single specific species and have been fishing areas that will allow me to throw presentations that will be appealing for all . This is one of the most exciting times to fish on the river as the warmer months start to creep in and provides fly fishing opportunities for strong and powerful fish that are moving in and becoming more active in the waterways . As I am preparing myself for the shad to fully move into the river come late May , I have been trying to focus a majority of my energy targeting big strippers . After having multiple experiences of not having the right weight rod , leader , or tippet , I have come back fully prepared . After making a couple of necessary upgrades in order to fish successfully this way , I have quickly fallen in love with throwing a fly from an 8wt rod , and fallen even further with catching a river stripper while ripping a fly through current . I recently had the opportunity to run up to Lake Berryessa to chase the bass bite which is in full swing , and decided to see if I would have similar luck fishing for Largemouths , spots , and smallies , rather than Stripper . Myself

and my father Ed Andersen , made the trip up together and decided to make a personal competition out of the trip and see who would be able to land the most fish , myself fishing a fly rod , and himself fishing with a conventional rod . I knew I was in for a steep climb when the wind started to ramp up , and after 5 straight hookups on his conventional rod , I realized

this one that was might be out of reach . After speaking with a couple of fellow anglers and doing my own personal research , I had devised a plan similar to the way I fish for Stripers . Throw big flies , create lots of movement , and strip strip strip . This plan quickly proved faulty as I watched him land more and more fish all at a depth of around 15-20 feet . Without a spare spool of sinking line to throw on , I made multiple attempts to attach set-ups that would allow either my split shot for fly itself to get low enough to partake in the action , with little to no success . With very little topwater activity taking place , I withheld from breaking out poppers and decided to throw both large trout imitation Gamechanger flies , along with various worm imitations flies in an attempt to match his success with a drop shot . This also proved unsuccessful and sent me back to the drawing board to improve my skillset in order to fly fish successfully for Bass here . Sadly , at the end of this article , there is no breaking news of the fly fishing vastly outfishing a conventional rod , and left me with a score in our personal competition that will stay unspoken . Will all kinds of fishing , practice and honing in on your specific craft is key to eventually reach success , and where I can say the conventional rod outfished me personally today , I don ’ t know if I will be able to say the same as I pile on practice and do just that !
catching fish . Anglers are using small ball jig heads with chartreuse tails , reported Uncle Larry Barnes at Sacramento Pro Tackle . “ The striped bass fishing in the Verona has actually picked up and the shad are showing early ,” said Tim Boggs of Elkhorn Outdoors . “ For example , Greg Clay caught a 4 lb . striper off the second wing dam south of Verona while using sardines .” Seamus Howard also bagged two striped bass in the 4 to 5 lb . range while shore fishing with nightcrawlers off Sandy Beach across from Discovery Park . “ On my last trip on my boat , 3 of us caught one 7 pound striper and released about a dozen shakers while bait fishing on the Sacramento from Garcia Bend to the mouth of Steamboat Slough . We also landed a 3-1 / 2 pound catfish ,” said Boggs . For shad , Boggs recommended fishing 1 / 16 oz . jigheads with green or red plastic grub tails .

LAKE TAHOE
The Spring Mackinaw Bite is Heating Up . Browns and Rainbows are In The Mix As Well
Lake Tahoe - Tahoe Sport Fishing is currently fishing with boats going out twice daily . The fish seem to be moving deeper where we have been catching them this past week . We are targeting the mackinaw in the spring and have been catching lake trout that are averaging 3-5lbs . Our largest as of late was 29 inches and weighed in at 10 lbs . We are starting to cross paths with browns and rainbows using the same bait ( minnows ) and have caught average size browns this past week . We are currently trolling and mooching the bottom to catch fish .

SHASTA
Tough Bite for Trout and Salmon
Shasta Lake – Jeff Goodwin with Jeff Goodwin Guide Service reports
that Shasta Lake is in its spring rut and fishing has become really tough for trout and salmon . Water temps are on the rise , starting at 60 degrees each day this weekend . Plankton blooms , flying ant hatches , and the presence of lots of Shad are making for a really tough bite . It happens every year and doesn ’ t last too long , but is a time of the year I don ’ t look forward to . Usually by mid May we ’ re seeing the bite come around again , but the years vary in timing for sure . Best bet is to look high in the arms for rainbows or hit the lower lake for big browns and salmon . The lake has been really clear so lighten up those leaders and size down on your hardware for more bites . The summer bite is best and at this rate its not too far away ! Rob Hower reports that The wind has finally let up , Shasta is around 87 ’ to crest and water temp is running still cool from 57 ° to 60 ° surface temperature in the morning . Still picking up rainbows , browns and even Kokanee and on surface using snap
weights or lead core on board ’ s . Guys also started to use downriggers and divers to get a little bit deeper . Fish are still being caught in the 10-20 ’ range with some going down double that . Rainbows still full of bug ’ s and other aquatic stuff . I haven ’ t yet seen any shad in their stomachs . But I ’ m using shad like spoons , while white produced a few rainbows this morning . The lake should heat up soon with 80 ° an 90 ° weather coming .
