Tons of Trout Action & Bass Beginning to Bed
OREGON HOUSE – The warm weather , slow winds and low lake level have propagated a sudden surge in surface temperature which has pushed trout deeper at Collins Lake . The lake the surface temperature is 63 degrees and the lake level is 33 feet from full . Dennis Abbott caught a 6 pound trout while using a silver Kastmaster . Since Noah Ruiz ’ s 6.75 lb . trout was caught on Orange PowerBait mid-March , we ’ ve seen tons of trout including Wyatt Shanks ’ 5 + pound fish caught from the bank near Elmer ’ s Cove . Wyatt limited that day while bumping spring green PowerBait along the bottom . David and another Wyatt used a wide smattering of baits and lures including nightcrawlers , Maglips & grubs all over the lake to bring in a double limit . If you ’ re not having luck otherwise , find a friend named Wyatt . David , Cooper and Shannon caught a freezer-full as did Ariel , Tyler and Bailey . With trout headed to deeper ( cooler ) water , it ’ s a great time to slow troll with family and friends . Wade , Karen , Lori & Doug of Fairfield teamed up to catch 16 trout on Rainbow Spooners : There are far too many limits to feature them all , and quite a few lunkers . Lucy was trolling a Kastmaster when she hooked a fighter weighing in at nearly 5 pounds . Mike White caught a widejawed 6-1 / 2 pound rainbow on a Firetiger Rapala . Niles St . City were casting Kastmasters and bumping Yellow PowerBait when they caught five trout and a smallmouth bass : Janette Jarrett of Chico caught a largemouth bass on garlic PowerBait . Jayson Yaj caught his first spotted bass and then 3 more ( all released ): If you are used to waiting until the end of April for the bass bite , don ’ t ! The fact that Jayson caught a run of four says that in some places on the lake , bass are already starting their pre-spawn feeding . The fact that we ’ re seeing bass caught by folks fishing for trout says that they ’ re ravenous . The fact that there ’ s warm temperatures early in the year appear to mean an unusually early start to the spring bass season .

The Lake Is Iced-Out
PORTOLA - Davis Lake has iced out and bank anglers are hooking rainbow trout , reported Jeanne Graham at J & J Grizzly ’ s Store and Camping Resort . “ I ’ d rate the fishing as fair ,” said Graham . “ Some bank anglers are doing very well while others aren ’ t . Fly fishermen are hooking trout on midge patterns , while bait anglers are using Power Bait and worms .” The fish range from 1-1 / 2 to 3 pounds each . The top areas are Coot Bay , Mallard Cove and off the Grizzly Campround .
“ The boat ramps are starting to ice out ,” she said , “ You can launch a small boat at Honker Bay , but you need to use a 4-WD vehicle .” There is some patchy snow on the ground in the shady areas .

Striped Bass Pace Spring Catches
LIVERMORE - The trout fishing has slowed down at Lake Del Valle as the water warms , but the striper fishing remains solid . “ Striped bass are out chasing threadfin shad ,” reported Jack Forzano of the Rocky Mountain Recreation Company . “ The hot spots have been the Lower Narrows and the Dam . The stripers are hitting anchovies and shad imitation lures .” “ The trout can still be caught ; you just want to start to fish in deeper water where the water is cooler ,” said Forzano . “ The top baits are PowerBait and crappie jigs .” Big striper honors go to Luis Medina from Sonoma , who caught two stripers up to 7.95 lbs . He was using anchovies at the Dam . Ian Lugtu from San Francisco landed a 7.55 lb . striper while soaking anchovies at the Lower Narrows . Mateo from Morgan Hill caught a 6.5 lb . striper while tossing out

The latest trout plant was on April 8 when Mt . Lassen planted 500 pounds of rainbow trout and 500 pounds of lighting trout .

CDFW Releases Feather River Salmon Smolts at Fort Baker
