It’s the law EASTERN ONTARIO’S UPCOMING ATV RIDES District 1 of the Ontario Federation of ATVs (OFATV) has rolled out its first draft of rides planned for 2016. More rides will pop up, but this is as good a time as any for riders to mark their calendars. These are major changes for on-road driving and they include: • more types of ORVs and ATVs are allowed on the shoulder of public roads, where permitted. This includes two-up ATVs, side-byside ORVs, and utility terrain vehicles • all riders, including drivers and passengers of all ages, must wear an approved motorcycle helmet and use a seatbelt or foot rests, where applicable • children under the age of eight are NOT allowed as passengers on any ATV or ORV operating on-road • the number of passengers is limited to the number of available seating positions • compliance labels are required on all ATVs and ORVs • the law provides exemptions for farmers and trappers, and for far Northern Ontario municipalities For off-road riding, an ATV or ORV driver must • be at least 12 years old, unless directly supervised by an adult or while driving on land occupied by the owner of the vehicle • carry the vehicle’s registration permit or a true copy • ensure that driver and passengers wear an approved motorcycle helmet, fastened with a chinstrap.
