Raise the stakes
In 2023, Trevor Owens’ first season as head coach, the Greyhounds took Clyde to the limit in the bi-district round. As the fourth seed, Peaster was stopped at the 9-yard line, falling short in a 41-34 loss.
For 2024, the mission was simple: win the program’ s first gold ball.
“ From day one, that was the one thing we were working for,” said cornerback / wide receiver Cade McCollough.
The Greyhounds battled through much adversity last season, losing two of their starting offensive linemen due to injury before District 4-3A play.
Along with learning the coaching staff’ s new ways in year two, the Greyhounds were forced to move multiple players around.
Safety / wide receiver Rhett Kelley admitted the team needed time to get over the devastating injuries, relying on the defense to get more opportunities on the other side of the ball.
Battling through a highly competitive district, Peaster finished with a second-best 5-1 record and achieved its goal of winning the young program’ s first playoff game with a 33-30 overtime classic against Comanche.
The expectations are higher in 2025 for Owens, who says the team needs to“ raise the stakes” if they don’ t want to be considered a one-hit wonder.
“ If you want to be up there, talked about with the great Parker County teams of Brock and Aledo, you’ ve got to win more than one gold ball,” he said.
Kelley felt that last season allowed Peaster to be in the conversation among the best teams in the area.
The first step for the program to achieve powerhouse status is worrying about what they can control with the new expectations, Owens noted.
