“
The leadership is very different this year compared to last year . Last year very vocal leaders who would get on you and make you get stuff done . days on an 11-man team . So everything was very weird . We ended up with 17 kids following some move-ins . It is a different feeling this year , especially with the numbers being up and having such a great year last year … to a 10-4 turnaround . Now there are a lot of people talking about you and it puts a target on your back .”
It ’ s a stigma , though , that Cox is used to , and it ’ s also something the Lions relish .
“ With this group , I think they want that . They want to be the head dog , the guy that everyone is looking for ,” he said . “ It is kind of scary as coaches , because you know one little slip up and it could mess up a lot of stuff for you . You just manage expectations by focusing on that one game and what we are doing in that game .”
While changes happen year to year for programs , there are some changes that can ’ t be made due to lack of players needed . To make up for size or numbers ,
Cox and his staff will rely on things that are in their control , including schemes . “ I think we are really comfortable with what we are doing on offense ,” he said . “ Defensively , I would like to do a little different things on defense that involves bigger guys upfront , but we can ’ t so we go with more of a 3-4 look with faster guys on the outside .”
One thing Cox is already learning is the different style of leadership from this year ’ s squad .
“ The leadership is very different this year compared to last year . Some people lead different ways . We do have leaders and they are great leaders , but they don ’ t chirp a lot . They don ’ t talk , they lead by example .” ★
