and several state championships in his career , he needs to be in the coaching hall of fame ,” Sims said of Weatherford ’ s coach from 2013-2016 . “ Coach [ Billy ] Mathis went to the state championship with Brock after leaving here . The last two coaches before me did a fantastic job , so that made it a whole lot easier for me . So as far as the kids working hard and all of that , I feel like that was already in place when I got here , the difference is the terminology , the kids being familiar with us .”
Last year was key for Sims to build relationships with his players , so each knows exactly where the other one is coming from , whether Sims is yelling from excitement or anger .
“ I know the kids now that I can put my arm around and talk to them , and I know the ones that need me to kick them in the rear and tell them to get after it ,” he said . “ It is just knowing each other that I think is a lot better .”
After a very successful first year with Weatherford , Sims looks to build off their success and get over the playoff hump . Last year , the Roos won seven games for the second time in 20 years , and hosted their first playoff game in school history after securing second in their district .
“ We did a lot of good stuff last year ,” Sims said . “ We are trying to get over that hump . Everyone is trying to win a district championship as well as trying to win a playoff game . We are just trying to get better every year .”
While some focus on the future and forget about the last loss of the season , the Kangaroos use it to build off of and try to eliminate their mistakes from that game . “ I want them to think about it , because sometimes just getting a little angry kind of gets you up in the morn-
