back from some serious injuries which kind of started us off a little bit slower than what we wanted , but by the end , we thought we were playing really good football . I don ’ t necessarily think the slow start is a bad thing . “ It really isn ’ t how you start , it is how you finish .” For Gordon , that means playing good football mid-year . “ I am OK with the slow start , as long as we are playing good football by our first district football game , but I don ’ t want to have a fast start and put all of our eggs into that basket and then play bad football when it comes district time .”
The Longhorns ’ pre-district schedule is a tough one , facing three top-5 teams in the state . Still , Reed said his team is excited for the challenge and sees it as an opportunity for his young team to test out positions early .
With new players coming in , it allows the team to focus on this year compared to fully focusing on how the season ended .
“ It is a different group of kids , I think they are naturally set to making their own path ,” Reed said . “ I think when that season ends you have to understand that for every team except for the 12 state champions , every team will end their season on a loss . So how do the other 3000 schools in the state of Texas figure that out ? The same way we do .
“ You put it past you , you step forward and you move on to the next part or chapter and take the next group of kids . It ’ s their turn to make their own imprint and to put their own gold ball in the trophy case where their names are going to be .” ★
