season , part of which revolves around a returning anchor on the offensive side in quarterback Tyler Moody .
“ His stats last year were outstanding ,” Mathis said . “ I think he threw for 45 touchdowns , four or five interceptions and around 3,200-3,300 yards . He had a great year for being in the system for the first year . Tyler is always one of the best athletes on the field , but he is the guy , when he ’ s in the huddle , everyone knows when the ball is in his hands great things will happen .
“ He brings that type of confidence to his teammates , he has that type of confidence and he is the ultimate competitor .
Mathis is also quick to praise Moody ’ s work ethic and ability to take ownership for “ anything and everything .”
“ If he makes a mistake , you don ’ t have to get on to Tyler , he knows exactly what he did ,” the coach said . “ He is one of those guys that wants to be perfect , and he is one of those guys — as I may be yelling to throw it out of bounds — he is running across the field and throws it back for a touchdown .
“ He is a bit of a gunslinger , but that is the type of guy that you want .”
As with the offense , the defense also returns their ultimate competitive leader in senior captain Zach Brewster .
“ He is one of those of those guys who can do anything , he is a lot like Tyler on the offense ,” Mathis said . “ He plays linebacker for us , he is our best blitzer and is the emotional leader for the team .”
This season won ’ t be without its challenges after the Eagles graduated their leading rusher , middle linebacker and a defensive end . But even with the loss of key contributors , Mathis is confident that his younger guys can step in and replace the graduating seniors .
“ It ’ s one of those deals … those guys set the standard for what it means to be successful , and the younger guys that are now seniors learned from those guys , so now we like to say we are reloading instead of rebuilding ,” he said . “ It is hard to replace seniors if you are not constantly working . Our guys are constantly working , so we are going to be able to replace them .
“ We are going to miss those guys , but it is year in and year out , you lose seniors and guys step up and step in .”
