RECENT DEVELOPMENTS

MUSEUMS
The MINNEAPOLIS INSTITUTE OF ARTS selected Juan Lucero ( Isleta Pueblo ) as its first full-time Native American art fellow . Lucero , originally from New Mexico , studied at the Institute of American Indian Arts and has a diverse background in the arts , including being a graffiti artist , art handler , and art buyer for the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center . The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community sponsored this fellowship .
SCHOOLS
Novelist and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott donated $ 5 million to the INSTITUTE OF AMERICAN INDIAN ARTS ( IAIA ) in Santa Fe . Some of the unrestricted donation will immediately provide financial and technical assistance to students . Funds will also go toward the establishment of the planned IAIA Research Center for Contemporary Native Arts .
iSCHOOL at the UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON named Miranda Belarde-Lewis ( Tlingit / Zuni ) as the first Joseph and Jill McKinstry Endowed Faculty Fellow in Native North American Indigenous Knowledge . An assistant professor and independent curator , Belarde-Lewis earned her doctoral degree in information science and her master ’ s degree in museology from the University of Washington .
GALLERIES
Almost 40 Inuit paintings , drawings , and prints were discovered in a derelict , abandoned house in Rochester Hills , a suburb of Detroit , Michigan . Among
these are two dozen original pieces from the West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative in Kinngait , Nunavut , including works by the renowned Kenojuak Ashevak ( Inuk , 1927 – 2013 ). Adnan Charara of GALERIE CAMILLE in Detroit is conserving the works on paper and will exhibit and sell the works on behalf of the homeowners .
ORGANIZATIONS
The INDEPENDENT CURATORS INTERNATIONAL , a New York – based nonprofit , chose Jordan Wilson ( Musqueam ) as its inaugural Indigenous Curatorial Research Fellow . An independent curator and PhD student at New York University , Wilson will research Indigenous language reclamation and partner with the Musqueam community in a curatorial project during his fellowship .
