Stewart Indian School operated as a federal boarding school for Great Basin Native children from 1890 to 1980 .
In January 2020 , a new museum opened to interpret the history of the school through the stories and experiences of Stewart alumni . The museum features a permanent exhibition space , a storytelling room , a research room where families can learn about their relatives who attended Stewart , a classroom space for educational activities and public programs , and the Wa-Pai-Shone Gallery , operated by the Great Basin Native Artists .
